CMU Orientation

Jun 01, 2006 18:23

Today I had orientation. I was a littler nervous, I guess, going into this because I am a little nervous about college. A lot of people act like CMU isn't that good of a college, and everyone tells me that I should just go to MSU instead if I'm going to teach and they make me look like an idiot. No. I am really, really happy with my college choice ( Read more... )

I think it'll help you become more INdependent, but yeah. :P

And when people say it'll be tougher teaching Special Ed because you're gay, I don't think they mean just that. At least, that's not what I meant when I said it. I mean, teachers in general who are openly gay would seem to have a harder time with things, simply because (depending on which grade you teach) students always poke fun at their teachers for one thing or another. That's all.

No. You implied that I couldn't act "normal" in a professional environment, such as me teaching in a classroom, with "normal" being "not extremely flamboyant" like everyone always makes me out to be. When I told you my students wouldn't have to know I'm gay, everyone laughed.

Well, as you know I'm biased toward CMU as well as you... but all that aside. CMU really does have a great teaching program. MSU's is good too but I personally don't want to be that close to home or on a campus that big... quite possibly some of the same reasons you've chosen CMU over MSU. Also I think that you'd be a great special education teacher. You're caring, understanding and patient... all great characteristics for a special education teacher, gay or not. Possibly the only thing being gay could help or hurt with is your better understanding of being a minority in society and all the 'perks' (or not) that come with that in and out of school. Other than that I can't see it having any effect one way or the other.

I think so too....MSU is cold to me, impersonal, not very friendly. I like my choice.

Matt, it sounds like your college experience is going to be a blast. Don't let anyone tell you anything that'll discourage you from doing what you really want to do, because it sounds like this career and this place are perfect for you. Congrats on finding a place where you feel "at home", sounds like you're going to have a wonderful time there. ^^
