Look back and remember how insanely radically left-wing the idea of civil partnership was just fifteen years ago.
The country may be dragging its heels (and its knuckles) in the California and Arizona cases, but it still serves as a sign of how far we've come.

BTW: John McCain does not feel that gay couples should have civil partnerships which are legally equal to marriage.
McCain supported a 2005 state initiative to "change Arizona's Constitution to ban gay marriages and deny government benefits to unmarried couples."
He has said: "...a lot of times it depends on what do you mean by gay union? Does it mean that they're able to enter into certain contracts, people have a partnership? I think so. But to give it the status of heterosexual marriage is not something that I would support ( ... )
