Internet Memory Lane

I was clearing some old files from a cabinet--making way for the new--and came across a folder with my first paid dial-up service records: I had completely forgotten that I had started with dial-up plans with K-Mart (bluelight.com--no kidding!) and then American Express had an offer for a plan that provided service as a part of one of their card ( Read more... )

We were on dial up for years before we switched to DSL - but we have never changed carriers - still get our service through the local phone company.

We were on dial-up with the same ISP from 2002 until October 2013 when the ISP discontinued their dial-up service. We were forced to go to cable modem then, a move that we didn't want to make. From 1998 to 2002 I occasionally used telnet and Lynx text browser through the local library using a dial-in phone number they provided.

We first had internet living in Kentucky and it was dialup through East Kentucky Online, so our email was something@ekyol.com. When we moved to Yakima we still had dialup, but of necessity switched to a new provider, nwinfo.net. I had an email address with them but also had several Yahoo, Hotmail, and Excite addresses (I was apparently on an email address frenzy). We kept dialup until mid-2007, when I moved to Portland and got highspeed internet with Qwest, and I think my parents took the plunge with it soon after.

My first dialup was long distance for reasons, so I only used it to connect long enough to send and receive email - so I got really good at this service that was like google through email. You could email search queries to a certain email address and it would send back links, and then you could email the link to the address and it would send back the text of the page. Yes, it was every bit as cumbersome as it sounds. :)

Oh, I piggybacked on my parents' AOL through college up to like 2006. It wasn't the greatest for any of us. LOL!
