Saw "The Illusionist" last night. Favorite movie of the year so far. Beautiful, touching, excellent story. Didn't make any of the mistakes I imagined could be made in its handling of the "does he really have Supernatural Powers" uncertainty. Period costuming and setting were completely believable without distracting from the rest. A must see ( Read more... )

I liked Mulholland Drive a lot. From talking to others and reading about it, it appears that peoples' enjoyment of the movie hinged on understanding what the "reveal" at the end meant. Otherwise it comes across as all disjointed and unsatisfying.

I even read a couple reviews from professional reviewers who apparently never got what the reveal meant in MD. It'd be like reading a reviews of Usual Suspects written by people who never put together what that movie's reveal meant about one of the characters.

Of course there were no such reviews of US, because its reveal was thoroughly revealing. The major flaw of MD is that its reveal is somewhat opaque. (But I'm still quite confident that my interpretation is the one the moviemakers had in mind.)
