Illinois to be the 2nd equal marriage state?Last year the Illinois Family Institute failed a petition drive to get on the ballot a state constitutional amendment banning gay marriage due to not enough signatures. In a poll 51% were opposed to it anyway with only 40% supporting ( Read more... )

A judge in RI decided that the state can recognize same-sex marriages performed in MA. We'll see if they take the next step.

The affirmation of religious organizations' rights to decline to marry a couple if it is against their beliefs to do so is largely symbolic, you realize. This has always been the case. The Catholic church can refuse to marry non Catholics, for example, and I am assuming that they can also refuse to marry Catholic couples if either of them has been divorced.

The fact that this sop to religious institutions is largely symbolic is another good sign, I think.
