Did you hear about Michael Crichton's recent testimony before the US Senate, talking about Global Warming?

It's scary how much authority is given to people with celebrity status.

its true, americans love hysteria. similar things happened when the awful movie "the day after tomorrow" came out. I mean, I don't deny that there definitely some environmental problems caused by pollution, but whenever a new movie comes out about the end of the world, everyone freaks out.

I would hardly say that Michael Crichton is respected only because of his "celebrity status". He went to Harvard (both undergrad and for his M.D.), he's taught grad school, and every one of his books is accompanied with years of research. His books are detailed because he has a real science background, and it shows. You'll notice that he didn't say global warming was completely a sham. All he said is that the people who do these studies into global warming aren't doing their studies based on the scientific method. Althogh I've never actually looked all that deeply into the studies sorrounding global warming, I would guess that's true ( ... )

Sorry, but I have to disagree with you there. Having a scientific background will assist in writing more technically competant novels, as Arthur C Clark demonstrated when he correctly worked out the physics of the Geosynchronous Orbit, however there is no way that a novelist (no matter how well educated) can have as thorough an understanding of all of the factors as the scientists who spend every day researching the problem.

The fact that a novelist was the best spokesperson they could find AGAINST the cause of climatology just goes to show how few credible researchers doubt that global warming is happening - you'd have thought that they might be able to pull out some evidence, alongside their celebrity spokesperson?

Actually, no ... this is a country that is allowing "intelligent design" to be taught in science classes in the name of being fair and balanced.

If this world is to be fair and balanced, I want science to be preached in church.
