Does anyone know how I'd go about renting a movie theater? I want to show Superman II (my favorite movie) in a private screening for friends as part of my 30th birthday in April but I have no idea how to go about it (or how to secure rights to show the movie/get a copy of the movie). When we rented the Heights for our wedding, we just called and were like, "Uh, can we rent it?" and we worked it out with the owner. But since then they've established actual rental policies.

I second this. I've never rented the theater but know that they have policies in place if one were to do so.

It's easy to do. Call up the theater and ask for rates. Most theaters rent out space all the time.

The tougher part is getting film. It wouldn't be something that the theater is already showing, and since they don't want a lawsuit, you'll need to get the rights as well as a print of the film. In this aspect, ask the Cinema Rex guys.

My company handles renting auditoriums for events, but I think that's only if you're showing content on something other than the film projector. I called to confirm and they said if you just want to show a movie and have some food made available, you should just contact the theatre directly. My guess is you'll get a better rate at a smaller local than a chain, but it's worth calling both.

My brother rented one for a kid's birthday, and I recall hearing he only dropped a few hundred on it, and that included pizza and pop. Concessions is better profit for the theatre so he probably came out better with per/head pricing - you'll have to do your own math!
