Computer Woes

Yesterday afternoon, I was watching The Office on my computer when all of a sudden, I heard a little “pop” and my computer went dead.  Nothing.  No sounds, no fans, nothing.  It wouldn’t turn on.  It was like it was unplugged.

Computer specifics:  I have a mid-2007 24” Intel iMac.  I bought it in July/August of 2007.  I didn’t get the AppleCare ( Read more... )

The entire procedure for swapping out the power board is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bezd48pn5tY Seems to take around 10 minutes (and the majority of that time is spent unscrewing little screws).

Time Capsule is easy, you are right and I have no excuses for not using it. Another free program is Carbon Copy Cloner - it works the same as Time Capsule but has a few more features (or so I'm lead to believe).

Have you tried resetting your PMU? I dunno if that is even an option on your model (I really do not trust that design of iMac, Logic Board/power issues have been plaguing it since the iMac G5....)

Yes, I tried that - one of the first things I tried (that was on Apple's support site). Thanks for the suggestion though.

Yeah, like I said, I hate that design. While attractive, I think it has a lot of issues and Apple refuses to admit it. I cannot begin to tell you how many people I've walked through the process on the gen 1 G5 machines when I worked AppleCare support.

Even before I got to it in your post I was thinking "he's going to say power supply". I've had co-workers that have had those go out on their Macs before.
