Back in 1993, I lived in Nashville, TN where just to get a parade PERMIT became a radical act. The gay club in Chattanooga had to sue the city twice to make theirs happen - first to get a permit and second to get a route that wasn't behind closed up factories and through cemeteries. There were people at a few of these that wore masks in case their pictures got taken.
While it may not have the scary urgency of 15 years ago, I still feel that getting any mass of people together and forcing your city/state/federal Govt to recognize you is a political act. Even if the news teams immediately zero in on the drag queens and go-go boys, numbers are still power.
