Sometimes when I feel a need for change or to do something I've wanted to for a long time but have felt held back by self-doubt, I find its good just to take a big leap and let inertia push you the rest of the way. Eg, Telling my boss I'll be leaving by the end of February. Then I'm forced to really find something to do at the end of that time. Or start sending out resumes like mad. Or buying a ticket to where I want to go without knowing for sure if I'll even have a job there *ahem* (Though I had good reason to believe I would!)
And don't worry about things working out. They might now work out as planned, but they will certainly work out... oftentimes better in ways you hadn't expected.
What Rheya said - you just have to make that leap. Not that I'm all that great at stuff like that myself, though... Setting a date to quit your job would be a good idea, since you know you want to get out of there. I don't know if I ever would have gotten out of Fry's if I hadn't just said 'screw it' and put in my two weeks notice, even though I wasn't sure I had another job lined up.
What kind of dog did you get? And is she a puppy or a full-grown dog?
