Okay?

So, can anyone tell me why a community would decline my request to join? I am right now slightly offended and maybe even a little hurt, but that is because I don't know how this site works. Can I be enlightened? Perhaps it's friends only, or set to private, and I was unaware of that--or something? Please let me know if you have an idea why.
