My apartment complex allows pets. I can choose either a cat or a dog that is under 50 lbs. I'm very much a dog person. I've always had a dog

Indoor cats only need three things: food, water and the litter box (not necessarily in that order). I lived in apartments with two cats with no problem, they are pretty much very independent creatures. The thing with cats is, they choose you, instead of you doing the choosing. ;) A male cat is a good idea, if you get an adult feline, that cat will love you forever. A kitten is a good idea as well, but they do like to play. Very important, get it fixed (neutered) as soon as you can, because male cats like to mark territory. If you have expensive furniture, you may want to consider declawing the cat, though I think is rather cruel to do that to a cat. If you go to a shelter, you'll know you'll get a cat with a clean bill of health and already neutered. Two of my cats I got them at shelters, and they chose me (Smokey actually jumped on my lap, and Lucky, RIP, made a lot of noise from his cage) The females I currently have, one, Boo, was being fostered at my in-laws and the other, Dora, I found her in front of my house. I've had a weird relationship with cats over the years. There's only one that REALLY liked me. His name was NN (No Nuts). :-) Every other cat would be friendly for a time and then give me a good scratch. That's why I would consider getting the front paws declawed, though I would rather not.
I think I may visit a shelter in a couple of weeks, once I let the apartment management my intent to get a cat. I'll pick up the stuff I need for it in the next week or two.
It depends. I take mine to a cat's clinic. It's a bit more expensive than a general vet, but since these are my babies I pay the price. Check in your area and ask around how much is a a yearly visit. (check if there's a low price clinic run by the city. or if the shelter provides services as well)
and what's a scratch here and there? My arms and hands are full of them ;) with 3 felines in the house... and oh yeah, make sure to put the toilet paper away from the feline. The love to tear it down to pieces ;)

Are vet visits very expensive for a cat?
