Character Information
Character Name: Riku
Fandom: Kingdom Hearts
Character History: Riku, at fifteen years old, resided with his two best friends at Destiny Islands. Sora, Riku and Kairi were the trio of the islands, the three Musketeers that couldn’t be broken apart. At least, they couldn’t be separated out of their own accord. As they planned to make a raft to travel to other worlds, Riku found another way out-the door to darkness nestled in their secret place. When a storm struck the islands pre-dating their cast off time, he decided that it would be the only way to get off of their home and escape. To Riku, Destiny Islands wasn’t a home; no, it was more of a cage for a locked bird. Taking the initiative, he plunged into darkness and urged his best friend, Sora, to go along with him, reaching out his hand to him. Sora reached back out for him, but couldn’t grasp onto him. Instead, he is able to brush against the light of the heart; although Riku was truly the rightful owner of the Keyblade, his choice jeopardized ownership over the weapon, and the Keyblade was given to Sora instead of him as he was transported out of the Islands.
When we face Riku again, a witch with the power of darkness has contacted him. Maleficent takes the boy under her wing and teaches him how to use the darkness now inside of his heart by deceiving him. She convinces him that Sora has actually replaced Kairi and he, with Donald and Goofy, the King’s trusted guards to find the Keyblade. With that in mind, he seeks to find Kairi himself. The opening of the door caused Xehanort’s Heartless (referred to as Ansem) to infest Riku’s body and heart; although he doesn’t know it, he hosts the Heartless inside of him. As the power of the darkness grows larger and larger, it becomes easier for Xehanort’s Heartless to take over his body. When the transition does happen, he possesses Riku’s body and speaks through him in a distorted voice, convincing Sora to open his heart by stabbing himself with a special Keyblade made to especially unlock hearts.
Riku, however, soon regains control over himself again and is able to manifest a translucent form, urging Kairi to run after she regains her heart from Sora’s sacrifice. He is sent to the realm of darkness, beyond the door of darkness. He tells Sora to close the door; and to take care of Kairi as he leaves with King Mickey. While Mickey closes the door on their side, Sora does on his side and the door disappears.
Chain of Memories is set a year after Kingdom Hearts. Riku appears in the same castle that Sora is fighting through. However, he starts at the basement while Sora fights through ground floor to the top. During the journey, he constantly fights against the lingering presence of Xehanort’s Heartless. He is determined on drilling it into Riku’s head that he is only part of the darkness, and he will always be just a part of it. Riku, of course, refuses and keeps fighting against him as he fights the other Organization XIII members. Organization XIII is the main protagonists of both Chain of Memories and Kingdom Hearts II. King Mickey helps him fight against Xehanort’s Heartless multiple times, as well as Naminé, who is Kairi’s Nobody and therefore able to reach out to Riku.
When the two meet in person, she offers to seal away the darkness inside of him, as she’s re-chaining Sora’s memories. Instead of accepting the offer, he refuses-he tells her that he’ll find his own way to overcome the obstacle within him. She smiles and says that she had hoped he would say that. He and King Mickey both set out on a path, and encounter DiZ at a crossroads. DiZ gives Riku a choice; either the road to light, or road to darkness. Riku, instead, chooses neither. He says that he’s taking the middle road; the road to dawn.
In the second game, Kingdom Hearts II, it has already been a year spent watching Sora regain his true memories. During that time, Riku has been fighting and training, helping DiZ and Naminé in their plan to restore Sora’s memories and self-being. Sora’s Nobody, Roxas, who was born during the first game when he opened his own heart, is needed to help Sora wake up again. Riku sets off to face the newest member of Organization XIII, Number Thirteen-Roxas, in fact. Instead of the one Keyblade Sora has, Roxas has two; and puts up an extraordinarily good fight. There is one battle where Roxas walks away a winner, but the second time around, he isn’t so lucky. Riku knows how to release his power over darkness, and transform into a mirror image of Xehanort’s Heartless to be able to wield his power properly and capture Roxas. During the second fight is when he undergoes said transformation.
During the rest of the game, he supplies blatant hints to Sora and company, but stays in the shadows with his face hidden like the other Organization members. Although he’s right behind him, Sora keeps looking for him-and finds him right when he least expected it. Kairi, in The World That Never Was, knows that it’s Riku helping her, not Xehanort’s Heartless. She points this out to Sora when she runs to him and tells him to not go as he was planning to. At joining hands, Sora, Kairi and Riku are able to see each other properly, through their hearts, and join together to fight their way to Xemnas, the lead Nobody of Organization XIII.
When Kairi, Sora and Riku are ready to return home, Naminé makes a portal come up to lead them home. Naminé and Kairi, as well as Roxas and Sora, are reunited. However, as soon as this happens, the portal starts to close-without Riku or Sora! They’re both forced to fight, side by side, against Xemnas in one final battle. Near the end of said battle, Xemnas is about to stab Sora in his side. Selflessly, Riku shoves Sora away and intercepts both hits (Xemnas spins to hit him again). The two best friends work together to power Sora’s Keyblade, sending a sharp burst of energy straight through Xemnas and ending the battle as he disperses into darkness. To their horror, thousands of Dusks appear and are about to fight against them. Riku scatters a great amount of his dark energy, making the Dusks disappear. Injured and incapable of moving by himself for the most part, Sora picks him up and supports him with an arm around his shoulders.
They are both transported to a dark beach before they can do anything, where they receive a bottled letter. This was Kairi’s letter that she sent to Sora from the beginning. “One sky, one destiny.” Is the last line, and with that, the door to light opens. Sora offers Riku his hand, claiming that they’d go together this time. They end up falling back into the waters of the home they had been trying to escape, with Kairi waving at them from shore.
Character Personality: Riku is a quiet, thoughtful person in an outspoken group. He's not very good at cheering anyone up, unless it's playful insulting like what he does with his best friend, Sora. He varies between completely sarcastic and offensive to very serious and down-to-earth when it comes to giving advice. He cares very deeply about his friends; if you’re ever lucky enough to become friends with him, you can know that he’ll never betray you. The only exception to this rule is when he needs to betray you for your own good, if you were in danger because you were associated with him. He won't let anyone have to suffer because of his mistakes, so he'll try his very best to make it up to whoever gets caught in the crossfire. That said, while Sora and Kairi are off in la-la land and gleeful, Riku's much more realistic. You could call him the 'bad cop' of the trio, because he'll interogate anyone who's close to his friends, if he doesn't know about them. He needs to know that his friends, and everyone around him, is safe, before he can rest.
Riku is branded as the twilight-he's traveling the road to dawn, if you will-the grey area between good and evil, light and darkness. Despite his outer appearance, he acts like any other teenager would in his situation. However, he usually covers his more adolescent instincts by silence or deep thoughts, and normally doesn’t let anyone inside of his thought process. Most people that talk to him should expect a pause or more physical responses to their questions or comments, as he’s more physical then verbal. Most people can tell by the look on his face what he's thinking, or his stance. Riku is very judgemental about himself. After all he experienced, and the tall fall he experienced, you'd have to be. As he's trying to get back on his feet, he's constantly reminding himself that he has to be able to go back home and face everyone. He isn't ready to do it alone, or even with friends. You'd never know this, the way he talks, though! He has a cool, collected and confident face on when he speaks, usually. Break though it and he gets a little flustered. He has a lot of insecurities, and as a result, he's closed off to a lot of people--even his friends. At times, even they don't know what he's thinking. When Riku doesn't want you to know something, you've got no idea what's going on.
Riku, all in all, is mostly a loner, even though he has very good friends that would stick by him through thick and thin. Everything he's experienced has lead him to feel that his friends would be better off alone, and since he's spent about half of a year or a year alone (or mostly alone), he'd rather they have gone home without him. He's still getting used to company and people wanting to be around him, so he's most definitely awkward around other people, and mostly quiet. He’d rather be in the background, watching his friends, instead of being the hero all the time. (Riku's still a pretty funny guy--for all the serious faces he makes, he does tell Sora he's a total sap and tells him that he 'never picked the brightest friends' as he references Donald and Goofy.)
Although he was supposed to be the chosen Keyblade Master, he lost it, and hit rock bottom in a very brutal way. Even after that, when he tries to redeem himself, he doesn't find himself worthy of being around people who he loves and cherishes. In the 'end', he's welcomed back home without a real taste of adventure, unlike Sora, who was going along for the ride. He’s a complete foil to the main character, Sora, who is cheery and optimistic in general (while Riku is more blunt and realistic). Riku, like Sora, was forced to grow up fast--but it affected Riku more, since he was more or less fighting his demons alone and had virtually no one to depend on for a long time. Riku is a strong, balanced person who is a great friend, but at the end of the day, it's very unlikely he'll remember that about himself.
Powers: Keyblade Master or not, Riku does wield a Keyblade. (Won't go farther than that, to be wary of spoilers). Way to Dawn (Way to the Dawn, if you like that extra syllable) is a Keyblade that deals more with physical strength than magic. As a result, his fighting style is quick and deadly, even for only using one hand. Sora and Riku have both been known to have incredible strength when dealing damage with their Keyblades--they can split buildings in half and Even without a weapon, fighting hand-to-hand, Riku is physically strong (his muscles aren't just for show, you know) and was able to knock Xion down with a single blow in 385/2 Days.

First person: You know... I'm starting to get the feeling that cleaning my room'll have to wait for another year. Just how many worlds are there?
I'd say there're too many worlds, but that'd sound ungrateful. Wonder if anyone has a map to all of them.
That's the first time I've asked for a map before.
A map to this place wouldn't be too bad, either, if anyone made one. How many people're here, anyway? From how many worlds?
What're your worlds like, whoever's seeing this? There're so many out there, there's got to be at least one I know about.
Does anyone know Destiny Islands?
