So this was basically a huge callback episode, right? There was the Sikh IT guy (who is not solely defined by his religion! he likes hip-hop! and classic cars!), and the bat from the business school episode, and Angela's Halloween costume, and Ashes, the alpha male kitten, and the stripper/nurse, and the wheelchair guy showing up for the Fun Run, Monkey and D, Kevin's skin cancer scare, and probably other things I've forgotten. It was like watching The O.C.! (Only kind of more satisfying. Sorry, O.C.! I still love you best.)
(When did I become a student of Office minutiae? WEIRD.)
What else did I like?
- Ryan pretending to be modest about being a "Wunderkind." And also his beard.
- Toby, my Toby, and his week of free pies! And how that was a stroke of luck so amazing he had to announce it to the whole office.
- Pam and Darryl slapping hands over sharing a religion.
- Jim taking off his shirt!
- Michael being "a little stitious!" Ha.
- The presence of the documentary crew being just slightly more obvious than usual, between the conference room scene and the "hilarious" doctor. It's interesting that they seem to be bringing that element in more.
- Toby being a WINNER. He's adorable.
And oh hey! JIM AND PAM! Kissing in secret in the car, holding hands, trading grins, joking around like they did in the good old days. Though I'm glad Pam got the chance to stand on her own (and walk through fire!) last season, I just like this show better when they're happy together. Giddy, even. I hope it lasts for a little while. I can't help it, you guys, I love them.
Also, I am totally rooting for Monkey and D.
I kind of miss Karen, though. Not Karen-and-Jim, but Karen.
You know, in some ways I don't have a lot of patience for TV. I kind of dread reading about the new pilots in the fall, because I hate adding new stuff. I'm busy enough as it is, and most of what's on is a pointless time-suck. But my schedule this season is kind of a pleasant balance, actually--I have one half-hour comedy, one excellent drama, one pointless-but-delightful hour of fun, and one high-quality reality show. While I might watch other stuff occasionally, that's it for my regular shows. I am happy with that.
I do miss Ryan Atwood, though. And Sandy Cohen. And Kaitlin Cooper.
