(you will see that i have some misgivings about polanski's arrest, but they have basically nothing to do with polanski.)

And I'm with you on the justice system in this country. It's obviously terrible in California especially. I don't know that "punishment" is really the answer here, and I don't have any ideas about acceptable alternatives to the current prison system. That's what I'm not talking about justice or the legal system or anything else except the total immorality of rape apology and victim-blaming.

yeah, it sounds like you and i are on the same page here. i also saw today that anne applebaum (she's a columnist for the washington post, among other things), who i have always had issues with, wrote a long column defending polanski and did not bother to mention in it that she's married to the polish foreign minister. conflict of interest much?

I KNOW. I saw that, too. And I think we're on the same page, too. Except you are far more invested in the law than I am. I'm mostly interested in social justice and morality. :)
