Thinking about e-books.

I really love the idea of the Amazon Kindle. It would be so fabulous to take my entire library and make it electronic so that I only have to carry a small object and maybe a portable hard drive when I travel. When I flew in to Houston for the summer, I had three suitcases full of books -- all works I'm referencing or considering or dealing with in ( Read more... )

1. The Kindle supposedly is quite good at addressing a lot of concerns that you listed. Ugliness, personality, etc. However, I've never seen one and, being in Australia, it's unlikely that I will. I don't have a problem with buying an early model of a thing, but, when it feels like a big investment, I hesitate. I think in this case, I just think that the Kindle's advantage is accessibility to books. However, the lack of removable memory (SD Card or the like) really annoys me. I know one can hold quite a lot of books, but if they can't be organized the way one likes, that's a problem. I do agree that buying music online seems a bit weird. I prefer to buy CDs.

I think I'll look into ebooks a bit more, especially the open formats. I find that the question in my mind is more "do I want to switch to an ebook reader?" rather than "do I want a kindle?" but, I hear that many of them don't work with Mac. I think I need to do a bit more research! :)

Thanks for giving me your thoughts. :)
