US wishes it had the longevity and power of Rome. We don't really hold a candle to that level yet. But I agree that the empire is intrinsic to humanity, just like hierarchy and leadership. And it seems clear to me all nations and empires, civs and cultures def have life-cycles from emergence to dominance to decadence, then wash, rinse, and repeat.

As for Obama I think it is good to remember that he himself was a legislator before becoming President, not a former governor or general. His personality so far seems to be the consensus-building and deliberative type, not the commander/decider type. And so far he has openly engaged the leaders and parties in Congress as his way of getting things done versus pontificating from the White House or threatening vetoes. Also big is that he also undid Guantanamo. So I get the sense Pres. Obama will do a lot to bring the Federal government more in line with original intents than his predecessor.
