The Loyale started life on the east coast (Virginia) and moved west in 1993. I never had any real body rust problems, except a small spot on the front edge of the hood where I took a rock that made it through the primer. I did have some kind of leak into the trunk I could never trace, and I drilled drain holes in the bottom of those "Saddlebags" in the trunk behind the rear wheel wells. Never had rust issues around those either.
Even had a incident where the back end of the car ended up in the Columbia River. But after pulling the drain plug in the toolbox area of the trunk, it eventually all dried out. Apparently they were doing a combination electrostatic/dunk tank kind of painting on the bodies back then. It held up very well, except for the clearcoat.
The Impreza is too new to show signs of much. Although it seems to have picked up some rock damage to the hood in similar spots. I recently had to put on a new windshield too.
