01. BALLAD FOR DEAD FRIENDS
Dashboard Prophets
♫ katniss walks the ashes of district 12
How are you feeling
Do you feel ok?
It keeps me reelin'
Will I ever be the same?
Have you been dreaming?
I don't dream at all
I have nightmares
I really wished I could have saved you
02. H O R S E A N D I
Bat for Lashes
♫katniss must become the mockingjay
They sang to me
"This is yours to wear
You're the chosen one
there's no turning back."
03. R E N E G A D E P R I N C E S S
Sonic Youth
♫ the mockingjay does her part;
katniss is either drugged, numb, or unconscious
all the time
Jet black hair
Tangled stare
Blood inside
Silent stare
Naked heart
Make way for the midnight princess
Midnight princess fight tonight
04. I DON'T HAVE ANYTHING
VAST
♫ peeta, imprisoned in the capitol
I stood on mountaintops
That overlooked the world
I can't find anything
Except a void inside
I've been stripped of everything
Except some flesh that bleeds
And I've been robbed of everything
Except a soul, except a soul
That needs you
Because I don't have you
I don't have anything
05. L E T' S T A L K A B O U T
S P A C E S H I P S
Say Hi To Your Mom
♫ katniss and gale agree to disagree;
it doesn't really work
And what's that saying again
They're only words
And words can't kill me
Well I can't even spell them
And the cadence
Of what she says is swell
Let's talk about spaceships
Or anything except you and me, okay?
06. G U E R N I C A
Brand New
♫ "she's figured out how snow's using peeta"
If I could I would shrink myself
And sink through your skin to your blood cells
Remove whatever makes you hurt
But I am too weak to be your cure
Is this the way a toy feels
When its batteries run dry?
I am the watch you always wear
But you forget to wind
Does anybody remember
Back when you were very young
Did you ever think that
You would be this blessed?
07. T H E D I S T R I C T S L E E P S
A L O N E T O N I G H T
The Postal Service
♫ district 13 under bombing;
gale vonuteers to go on the rescue mission
I'll wear my badge, a vinyl sticker
With big block letters adherent to my chest
That tells your new friends I am a visitor here
I am not permanent
You seem so out of context
In this gaudy apartment complex
A stranger with your door key
Explaining that I am just visiting
And I am finally seeing
Why I was the one worth leaving
08. H I T T H E F L O O R
Linkin Park
♫ peeta is hijacked
I know I’ll never trust a single thing you say
You knew your lies would divide us
But you lied anyway
And all the lies have got you floating
Up above us all
But what goes up has got to fall
09. R O O T L E S S T R E E
Damien Rice
♫ katniss runs away to district 2;
it's hard to hope
And did you hate me, hate me so good
That you just let me out, let me out, let me out
Of this hell when you're around
What I want from this
Is learn to let go
No, not of you
Of all that's been told
10. C' M E R E
Interpol
♫ "l can never compete with that";
"it's like kissing someone who's drunk.
it doesn't count"
It's way too late
To be this locked inside ourselves
The trouble is
That you're in love with someone else
It should be me, oh, it should be me
Oh, how I love you
See what stands long ending fast
11. S T R A I G H T & A R R O W
Indica
♫ gale's plan to blow up "the nut" in district 2;
"I know you're not heartless,
but I won't tell you it's okay"
Road's getting narrow
With snakes in the shadow
And the shade where you sleep
Is formed by the gallows where
A man with an arrow was hung by the shallow
Little boys little boys little boys
Who became what they feared
Who would have sought love from those who
prayed for peace while sewing hatred's seed?
Who would have sons knowing all the orphans
they would soon deliver?
Kneel beside me, in this field of memory
Don't become those you fear;
Don't kill what you've been
12. B L O O D
Editors
♫ "instead, I watch myself get shot on television"
This wicked city has dragged you down
You're with the red lights
Your side of town
Don't say it's easy
To follow a process
There's nothing harder
Than keeping a promise
If there's hope in your heart
It would flow to every part
If there's hope in your heart
13. C R U S H C R U S H C R U S H
Paramore
♫ katniss throws herself into training;
"peeta has no business learning how
to assemble a gun"
I got a lot to say to you
Yeah, I got a lot to say
I noticed your eyes are always glued to me
And it makes no sense at all
They taped over your mouth
Scribbled out the truth with their lies
If you want to play it like a game
Well, come on, come on, let's play
Cause I'd rather waste my life pretending
Than have to forget you for one whole minute
14. T H R O U G H T H E G L A S S
Stone Sour
♫ "friend. lover. victor. enemy. fiancee.
target. mutt. tribute. ally."
I'm looking at you through the glass
Don't know how much time has passed
Oh, god it feels like forever
But no one ever tells you that forever feels
Like home sitting all alone inside your head
How do you feel? That is the question
But I forget, you don't expect an easy answer
When something like a soul becomes
Initialized and folded up
Like paper dolls and little notes
You can't expect a bit of hope
So while you're outside looking in
Describing what you see
Remember what you're staring at is me
15. I N T H E C R O S S F I R E
Starsailor
♫ the star squad goes to the capitol
to fight a propaganda war
and goes rogue instead
I don't see myself when I look in the mirror
I see who I should be
I don't see myself when I look in your eyes
Thank God for that
I don't see myself when I look 'cross the river
I see where I should be
I don't see myself when I look from the sky
Thank God for that
I hear them screaming on the radio
It's getting louder
In the crossfire
Trying to find some hope
From the ashes of their broken homes
16. C A N N O N B A L L
Damien Rice
♫ "our next move is to kill me";
"don't let them take you from me";
"always"
There’s still a little bit of your taste in my mouth
There’s still a little bit of you laced with my doubt
It’s still a little hard to say what's going on
There’s still a little bit of your song in my ear
There’s still a little bit of your words
I long to hear
You step a little closer each day
That I can´t say what´s going on
Stones taught me to fly
Love, it taught me to lie
Life, it taught me to die
So it's not hard to fall
When you float like a cannonball
17. K I L L I N G M O O N
Nouvelle Vague
♫ "katniss will pick
whoever she thinks she can't survive without"
Fate, up against your will
Through the thick and thin
He will wait until
You give yourself to him
Under blue moon I saw you
So soon you’ll take me
Up in your arms
Too late to beg you or cancel it
Though I know it must be the killing time
Unwillingly mine
18. B I T T E R E N D (L I V E)*
Placebo
♫ the street of capitol under assault;
"shoot me. that's what he was mouthing"
Since we're feeling so anesthetised
In our comfort zone
Reminds me of the second time
That I followed you home
You shower me with lullabies
As you're walking away
Reminds me that it's killing time
On this fateful day
19. Z O E J A N E**
Staind
♫ "the morphling opens the door
to dead and alive alike"
When I walked out this morning
I cried as I walked to the door
I cried about how long I'd be away for
I cried about leaving you all alone
I want to hold you
Protect you from all of the things I've already endured
I want to show you
All the things that this life has in store for you
I'll always love you
The way that a father should love his daughter
20. D R O W N
Three Days Grace
♫ "nothing has changed.
nothing will ever change now";
katniss shoots coin
Good morning day
Sorry I’m not there
But all my favourite friends
Vanished in the air
It’s hard to fly when you can’t even run
Once I had the world, but now I’ve got no one
If I needed someone to control me
If I needed someone to hold me down
I would change my direction
And save myself before I drown
PART TWO.ZIP*I have the Live in Paris version, and the regular ones just never sound good enough after that.
** This, as I've concluded upon carefully rereading those passages over and over, is entirely my headcanon; but I have a distinct memory of reading about Katniss hallucinating about her father singing. I might have dreamed it, this combination of the explosion scene, the drugged delirium and the way Katniss uses singing later as a coping mechanism. Well, her father is obviously very much the comfort figure for Katniss, so it's not a very big stretch.
