This episode seemed like it was missing about ten minutes. All of Miss Hartigan's backstory came rushing out during the funeral scene. Like you, I'm far more curious about how she met the Cybermen how they decided she could help them. I'm sure the availability of a practically endless stream of child labor had something to do with it. Setting up and filming a scene at the workhouse would have been terribly expensive, but they could have told more backstory through exposition. A sentence here and there about the horrors of the workhouse wouldn't have been amiss, I suspect ( ... )

That's a really interesting analysis. I'll have to think about it, but you're right about both the need for more backstory on Rosita and Hartigan and the good and evil dynamic. Of course we mostly still have that (as Tim Robbins' character expounds in The Player), and I think the reversal of that in VotD is part of why I don't like that story very much. Thanks!
