Joe's drunken running commentary on Star Trek. Not the series. You know. The movie. The reboot, not the boring '70's film ( Read more... )

Karl Urban is a terrible Bones. He is doing an impersonation of Kelley, not an interpretation of the character.

The apple during the Kobayashi Maru is annoying and stupid.

Vulcan blowing up would be more like England blowing up. The Star Trek equivalent of Canada is probably Andor because its cold.

I like the name Spock Prime.

I agree about Billy Boyd being a better choice.

I like how Karl Urban's Bones was exactly like Kelley's. They can do new interpretations of everyone else, but Bones is the one guy they can't change. If he's not a cantankerous southern doctor in space, then he's not Bones. Just my opinion, anyway.

I like the apple because it shows how arrogant Kirk can be.

Yeah, Vulcan blowing up is more like England blowing up. That fits much better. But Andor as Canada? Maybe Betazed. Because Betazed is useless and all the good natives leave the planet.

Spock Prime was the name they used for him in the script. Personally, I like Classic Spock and Spock Lite.

It's a shame that Billy Boyd didn't become huge after LOTR.

What bugged me about Urban's performance seems to be exactly what you like about it. He was just doing what Kelley did, and nothing new. You can be the character of a southern doctor in space without being an impersonation of the previous actor, just as you can be a half-breed Vulcan with a crush on Kirk without playing it the same way Nimoy did.

The apple could have shown Kirk's arrogance, but I felt that it was overacted, which may be why you like it. You may like that Pine was doing a Shatner over-the-top gig there.

Billy Boyd makes me a little horny.

You might have a point. All I know is that when I saw Star Trek in theater's and Karl Urban made his first appearance, drunk and bitter about his divorce and immediately struck up a friendship with Kirk, I was smiling like a Japanese schoolgirl in a Hello Kitty store, turned to my girlfriend and said "That's so awesome." She just stared at me and said "...ok," because she's not a trekkie. And had no idea that we just learned how McCoy got his nickname.

I feel that due to Shatner any portrayal of Kirk must be overacted, a least a bit. There's simply no way to play Kirk without that balls out cockiness. I mean, can you imagine a calm, composed and genteel Kirk? Fuck no. He HAS to be overacted. And I'm not sure Chris Pine was doing a Shatner impression there. Have you seen Smoking Aces? Chris Pine chews up the scenery in that film as a psychotic Neo-Nazi redneck hitman. That dude is no stranger to overacting.

I feel the same way about James Spader. Boston Legal was like porn for me.
