Rachael Ray's Scarf: We need to stop catering to special interests.

In case you have not heard, Rachael Ray appeared in an online ad for Dunkin' Donuts. No big deal right? Wrong. The ad has been pulled from the air. Why? Rachael Ray's scarf. Apparently some of the ultra right wing and some of the ultra Christians took offense to Ray's scarf. How can a scarf be offensive? Apparently her black-and-white fringed ( Read more... )

If scarfs like that symbolize hate then you're saying most Arabs & most Muslims (which aren't synonomous as my Catholic Palestinian friend could tell you) are terrorists or are full of hate. I agree that certain symbols -- real symbols, like a swastika for example--that are the mark of a specific group should be discouraged. But when you take a cultural garb and say it symbolizes hatred that's overboard. So I think it's ignorant to lash out against cultural attire, not to lash out against specific hate symbols. Sorry. I lived in Egypt for 6 yrs. Scarfs like that are NOT a symbol of hate.

I agree with you 100%. I saw a picture of her with the scarf, and honestly, it looked like a scarf. I didn't look at it and automatically think "terrorist."

I'm just to the point where I just try to wear what I can within the most basic definition of good taste, and if it offends someone (and with all the crazies out there chances are it will), they can go screw themselves, or maybe take a shot at worrying about things that matter.

And honestly, when I saw the pic, my exact thought was: "That scarf is fabulous. A little too high-fashion for Rachael Ray, but still fabulous." I would wear the scarf. Not because I'm a terrorist, but because I'm fabulous. As is the scarf.

After further scrutiny of the scarf in question, my professional opinion is that the pattern is different than the keffiyah. Keffiyah pattern is mostly geometric and checkered, Rachael Ray's has an obvious paisley pattern to the interior of the scarf.

The scarf is not intended to be any kind of hate symbol, and we should stop treating it as such.
