Wait, we're gay now?

It's nice that Iceland has the first open lesbian premier:

Only, why do the news articles say "gay"?  What's wrong with "lesbian"?

(I know some lesbians do use "gay"; I just don't get it, and I think it reduces visibility.)

I like the way so many people are qualifying her as "first openly gay head of state in modern times", because, well, even if you don't want to remember William Rufus (which is understandable), I think failing to remember Trajan, Hadrian, and Antoninus Pius is a bit of a bad thing. (The Four Good Emperors: proof positive that if you want long-term stable good government you hand over absolute power to gay people. Because they have the sense to adopt the best-qualified person to come next rather than mess about with blood relations.)
