"Why do I have a piece left over?"madcatwomanFebruary 14 2004, 00:56:58 UTC
Cos you do. I found that IKEA often seem to stick an extra bit in as part of the packing. It'll come in handy for something, someday. Stick it in the loft/garage/shed and one day you'll need it (or you'll sling it out if you ever move house again). I speak as a woman whose flat was littered with excess bits of wood from IKEA and MFI not so very long ago. I slung mine. I don't DIY, I GALMIN (Get A Little Man In). Bookshelf space is on the right... Is this a test? Do we get results?
I don't have a theory nor is it a test. But it just intersted me as I put books on things that there was, for me, a defiante place to start and that's on the right. And I'm right handed.
I guess it might have something to do with having been conditioned to read things from left to right. Mind you, they seem to do this differently on the Continent -- not the reading from left to right, that is, but the alignment of books. Over here, if you put your book on the shelf the right way up, the title will usually have its top towards the front page of the book, on the right hand side. This is often done the other way -- title has its top towards the back of the book -- for books published in other European languages, and it drives me crazy when I am looking at books in shops over there. No idea why. *shrug*
This in the halcyon days when the books were also sorted (mostly alphabetical by author): things are added from the upper left, and slid along as needed.
The little remaining space on my CD case--which is an artifact of it being awkward to get in and file all the CDs that are currently stacked on a speaker--is on the right-hand side of the bottom shelf.
Unread bookshelves have sapce on the left, unless they have two different categories on, in which case the categories go to each end and the space appears in the middle; other bookshelves have space on the right.
