snap on to the lighthouse!
you've inspired me to write up a list, too. i keep trying to, but i get so easily seduced by a new book the lists end up miles long.

i must be restrained.
and i also must post the letter i've written you! x

Ugh, Frankenstein. :P I had to re-read it last year for an English course. It isn't exactly a favorite of mine ;) . . . I'm not sure why. I like the ending, but the rest of it just seems to meander. And I usually don't mind books that meander, either, because I adore Moby Dick.

To The Lighthouse is soooo, so, so, so wonderful. I think I copied half the book down into my Favorite Excerpts notebook. :)

Luckily it's only the first time round for me, but other people in my class have studied Frankenstein before and they are really NOT enjoying it. I like the creature's narrative, but the rest of the book (particularly from when Victor starts creating the second creature) just bores the life out of me. I have to admit, I'm not keen on Gothic Literature generally, which is a bit of bitch since it's the basis of our A Level course!

Everyone keeps saying that, so I think I'll have to check it out next. I've given up completely on Heart of Darkness

hurrah! I ♥ Mr Poe
I think The Fall of the House of Usher is wonderful, but I haven't yet met another person that likes it, so I think that's a bad sign.
I'm ashamed to post my list, I have around 30 books in my room that I've yet to read.

I always do that! Always, always! Curse me. I'll go change it now.

Worrying? She looks lovely: is it a detail of a painting?

I found that I had to set aside a time and force myself to get through Heart of Darkness. The imagery was interesting, as was the concept of Kurtz, but it is really redundant at most points. Conard needed a different writing style, a more organized mindset, or something.

I think the best thing to come out of it is the single line "I love the smell of Napalm in the morning!" from the inspired movie Apocalypse Now. (Which I don't recommend since it's just as anti-climatic as the book is.)

Hurray for Edgar Allen Poe! (Which reminds me of how I have a large list of to-read books I probably should dedicate more time to...)

Completely agree with you there. There is a difference between slowing the pace to create tension and being dull: I'm not sure he knew the difference. (I think I've seen some of Apocalypse Now and it didn't really interest me either.)

I think should: you'll have to find something to do offline when yoo're not on LJ.
