Torture Porn

I've seen the phrase "torture porn" used a couple times now to describe a new genre of horror movies.  You've probably seen ads for them - "Saw", "The Hills Have Eyes", "Captivity", "Hostel".  They seem to be everywhere these days, though I've never had any desire to see them.  They also seem to be aimed at a younger audience (rated M for immature ( Read more... )

I haven't watched any of the horror genre movies you are talking about, but I had the same kind of disgust when I saw The Passion of the Christ. There were a lot of justifications thrown around for how violent that film was, but when I looked around the audience at the theatre and saw middle school-aged children watching the flesh being very realistically stripped from a man's back...blech. Maybe we aren't really better than the Romans with their gladiators, just slightly more sanitized.

There is some crime thriller series out there about a guy named Dexter, who is a serial killer, but he only kills other serial killers. The author says he started with the premise that "sometimes it's okay to be a serial killer."

the same could be said for Cheney, Rumsfeld, Bush...

maybe hollywoodian liberal executives make these movies to assuage their guilty consciences for the iraq war?
