I have some strongly mixed emotions... It looks more like The Watchmen than I ever thought an adaptation would ...but it also has some of the slow motion gloss that "300" had, which seems really out of place. I dont know, I keep having this feeling that even if it -can- be adapted well, maybe it shouldn't be.
Well, I've probably read Watchman a half dozen times over the years and I think it's interesting and visually-appealing, but terribly written as far as plots go. Fucking terrible. The fact that they're keeping the ending is going to PISS OFF everyone but the comic nerds. As the end is fucking retarded. The whole plot is nonsensical.
But I think Snyder's glossy style will be appealing. It'll be like a more colorful Sin City gloss. I mean, that comic was very two-dimensional and the gloss that was added worked. Of course, it's not exactly supposed to be representative of reality, but I think Snyder's raging fanboyism will make for at least a severe and somewhat unwarranted faith to the comic.
The most astounding thing, given the breadth of the material, is that he's leaving in the pirate stuff...and I dont know how you can consolidate -all- the material into a two hour flick. Still, I love that 300 bought Snyder the cred to pull the film in with an R rating and having it set in the 80's.
But I actually really like the ending of the novel...something about the Cold War fatalism demands something so incredibly dire to off set the ticking of the nuclear clock towards midnight, and it draws in the concept of greyness and ambiguity into the realm of a story that would more natural tend towards a black and white, good versus evil type of morality play, and I think that's one of the novels real successes.

Wasn't supposed to be up until tomorrow, but I think it got bandwidth-bombed off the internet.
