I love it that today´s article of the day in Wikipedia/English is devoted to atheism. And that today´s article in Wikipedia/German is devoted to Desmodus rotundus - the common bat.

Which I think I´m going to play the Euromillions lottery :p
Have a pleasant weekend, folks!

Is there a connection? *g* I have never thought of bats having a belief system. How does one become an atheist bat? Or is it only the common bats that are atheists? Richard Dawkins will be overjoyed. I'm reading his book, The God Delusion at the moment. Cruel, witty in parts and a bit mean about true believers. *g*

Nah, there isn´t one, except I identify with both *g* and bats are traditionally associated with evil, darkness etc etc (beats me why! I wouldn´t live in a place which bats avoid - they naturally select the best spots to proliferate ;))

How does one become an atheist? Can only speak of myself - when you´re born and raised in Spain, blessed land of the Santa Inquisición, the Opus Dei, the Palmar de Troya among other aberrations (and OTOH of wonders like the Jesuit order), and religious machismo to the nth grade, then you grow up to be unquestioningly religious, or you´re put off that whole department for life. I fall in the second category.

I just saw that very book in the wish-list of a friend, and given that she´s a very religious *and* very discerning person, I wondered about it *g*

I think it is easier to be atheist in countries where one religion does not predominate or one sect of a religion does not predominate, the brain washing isn't as complete because you're not getting it from all parts of society. Also I think Protestant churches' version of Christianity doesn't seem to stick as well, unless you're raised in one of those god-awful fundamentalist sects that proliferate in the US and preach Intelligent Design, an oxymoron if there ever was one.

I don´t know... in Switzerland, for instance, you have lots of Zwinglians and Calvinists but also many Catholics and Jews, and the overall feeling (IMHO) is one of a curious overall mix of general tolerance and universal philosophy of laissez-croire, and a jealously guarded secret "holier than thou" tude individually. Bit of a "I´m so sure I think I´m in the right, that I can live with anyone else´s beliefs." At least that was the strange feeling I had there, LOL.

Oh, Intelligent Design... I´m just too dumb to grok its point, I´m afraid ;) It takes the kind of leap of faith rarefied self-abstracting skill I´m incapable of.

Ups - I meant, YAH ILLAH ILLAH ILLAH!!!

If you do go there, please, please do make loads of pics and keep a travelogue!! It looks like a heap of ruins and nothing else, but the place has extraordinary meaning in history... and who knows how long even the ruins will stand, given the nasty plans of so many countries against Iran *sighs* Cultural treasures are the first to be looted...

Tell me about it! *shudders at the memory of Babylon and what the US tanks did to it* We'll make an Exkursionsbuch. German-speaking person that you are, I could copy the part on Alamuth for you :D

Yes, yes, yes, please do!! (Iz speaks German too, and given her interest in all things off the beaten track, this jewel of Ismailite architecture and philosophy should fascinate her, too)

Herzlichen Dank already!!

I tend to do a lot of OT at a number of people's lj. Hope you don't mind.
We went hunting for the location of the Assembly Rooms in Dorchester and I found that they will have an exhibition on TE Lawrence from mid-June.

So whenever you plan to do your Lawrence of Arabia days, remember that Lawrence country is also Aubrey country.
How's that for a bit of useless information?
;D

That is not useless information, that is serendipity *is too serious and excited about this*

DAMN, it´s already almost mid-June - are you going to see it, perhaps????

I hope you´ve posted that in your journal, I´ll try find more info and post about it in the te_lawlence Lj community - it´s been slumbering for too many days already *g*

I hope you´ve posted that in your journal
I have not started on any posts, dear. And no, the exhibition starts on June 16th and as you can see, there are many places in Dorset associated with him.

The Dorchester County Museum has quite a number of exhibits on Lawrence.

Therefore the area seems to be made for you, you can either go naval or desert-y

*bookmarks Dorchester County Museum and vows to go there first chance there is to spend a week in Dorset* And ooops, I still have to see the Solent! And GREENWICH. Jeeves, why can´t I be deployed to England for at least half a year? (if it´s enough... beginning to think a year of weekends spent exploring might do - barely!)

Och aye, and HOW I wish I had the torment of choice, but alas - I´m bound and tied by unexpected and hi-res work plus four days in hospital next week. And then, I hope, Wotan moving in!

And dear, both ORF-2 and ARD have broadcast a two-part lovely documentary on the Galápagos islands, Darwin also featuring, of course. I couldn´t tape it so I´m thinking of buying it on DVD because it was so detailed, and I don´t know if you were already back home and caught it. Fancy a copy?

After the wonderful DVD two books from amazon arrived today! on Pirates! You are spoiling me much too much.

Which I think I´m going to play the Euromillions lottery :p
You must have won it considering what heaps of money you spend on me! First you don't let me pay in Vienna and Sopron and anywhere else I tried and then and now you shower me with books and DVDs.

Thank you so much!
*hugs*
And that is why I sent a book today which I hope will meet with your approval when you see it.

My, you are up early! Packing your bags for hospital? I left a message on your phone to wish you all the best.

I guess the parcel will have arrived in about a week. I actually meant to send it from Chatham but realilzed, I had already used up your address stickers and so it had to be sent to me first so I could send it to you. Doesn't make you any wiser, hm?

Nah, haven´t won a thing :/
Haven't won anything either.
*commiserates*

Time next Saturday after 8 for me squeeing enthusing into your ear about England?
