Water and Winchesters Don't Mix

John and Sammy take a little trip to the park.

Disclaimer- Supernatural and all its characters belong to the CW and Kripke.

This story is dedicated to Chris, one of my rowdy first graders a few years ago. Chris was in a similar situation but there was no one to help him. He would have been a high school senior this year.

Now that I’ve totally depressed you, on with the story.

Water and Winchesters Don’t Mix

John sat on a rusty park bench searching the paper for his next hunt while trying to keep an eye on Sammy.

After bringing a sick Dean home to Pastor Jim’s cottage, John decided to take his youngest out for awhile so Dean could rest without being pestered by Sam. And hopefully separating the boys would also prevent Sam from getting sick, too.

“ Yeah, right” John thought. “Like that’ll happen. I’ll be lucky if it doesn’t hit all of us twice.”

With that thought in mind, he took one last look at Sammy, who was busy playing in the sandbox with the trucks Bobby had given the boys. Assured that his boy was safe, John turned his attention back to the paper. He should have known better.

Sammy sat and stared at his trucks. Playing in the sandbox wasn’t any fun without Dean. But daddy wouldn’t let Dean come. Sammy had tried to get daddy to play but all daddy wanted to do was look at his stupid paper. Sammy sighed. He was bored, and he didn’t want to play by himself. He wanted someone to play with. Gazing around the park, Sammy’s attention was drawn to two big boys kicking a ball to each other. That looked like fun! Maybe they would play with him.

Sammy threw his trucks in the dirt and walked timidly over to the boys. He stood silently for a moment gathering up his courage.

“Can I play?” he asked shyly.

“Go back to the sandbox, kid. You’re too little to play with us” Ritchie answered.

But Sammy never took no for an answer. Uncle Bobby said it was ‘cause he was mule-headed just like his daddy. Sammy didn’t know what “mule-headed” was but he liked it when Bobby said he was like his daddy. Sammy decided to ask the boys again. He knew how to make people say yes to him.

“Can I play, please?” Sammy asked again, puppy dog eyes firmly set on the two older boys. It worked like a charm.

“O.k.,” said Chris “You can play. When one of us misses the ball, you can go get it for us.”

“Thanks!” Sammy shouted. He ran over and kicked the ball to Chris.

The older boys started playing ball again being sure to miss every now and then. Then one particularly hard kick sent the ball into the pond in the middle of the park. Sammy ran to get the ball ignoring the older boys calling him back. Sammy stood on the bank of the pond and reached for the ball. He couldn’t quite reach it. He stepped on one of the smaller rocks at the very edge of the water and tried again to reach the ball. His feet slipped, and he fell headfirst into the pond.

John’s head snapped up when he heard boys yelling for help. His eyes focused on the empty sandbox. He was on his feet and running toward the commotion before he had a chance to think. What he saw when he got to the pond made his blood run cold. An older boy was walking out of the pond carrying his little boy. John raced over and took Sammy from the boy. Sammy’s cries were music to John’s ears. It meant his boy was alive!

John gave his baby the once over. Except for being cold and scared, Sammy was fine. Hugging his little one tightly, John slowly started calming down. He looked over at the boy that had saved Sammy.

“I don’t know how to thank you for saving my boy” John told Chris.

“You don’t need to thank me, sir” Chris replied, “I just wish I could have gotten to him before he fell. We need to go home now. See you around, Sammy.” Chris and Ritchie turned and walked away.

“Let’s get you home, Sammy” John stated as he stood up and started walking back to the impala. Once he got Sammy home and changed, John had a new hunt to start. The new hunt- finding a kiddy leash for his youngest before he sent John to an early grave.

The End
