Drat, I am sorry to hear that. Of course, the guy leaving implies that he had no insurance...so most likely your Under-insured/uninsured was going to have to take care of this.

A hit and run is NEVER fun. I had a drunk woman back into my parked car in a parking lot while I was inside playing a gig. Thankfully we were on break and one of my band mates was outside when it happened. He managed to get the lady's plates and we called the cops.

We managed to track her down, but she had no insurance. I had to replace the door of my car, which cost a pretty penny but was not enough to be covered by my insurance. We still are getting money coming in from her on occassion to pay us back, but something like $50 at a time. The accident was 3 years ago..

Sometimes people without insurance are the ones who get away with shit scott-free.
