This is a rather random comment, but when I see your birthday wishes posts, I notice that they are often early and I've been wondering whether you don't have the superstition in the US that is bad luck to wish happy birthday too early. Here it is better to congratulate too late, than to be premature, also with birthday cards and such. I think the origin of this is from the not inviting disaster set of superstitions, i.e. by being so sure the other is going to see it, they might not make it to the full date after all. So while I don't really believe in bad luck, I've learned as a kid that it was just not done to wish happy birthday until the date had arrived to bring no misfortune onto them. Also if you have a party yourself and want to schedule it on a weekend rather than a workday, you need to do it after the birthday, not before, and so on. It never really occurred to me that this superstition might be so localized.
I've never been aware of any superstition about wishing someone happy birthday too early! The reason I put up my birthday wishes posts early is that I post the day I get the birthday notification from LiveJournal. That's because I don't want to forget or miss someone's birthday! That's all it is! (In fact, when sending hard copy birthday cards, I often send them quite a bit early, for the same reason! Christmas cards, too!)
As far as holding a party for birthdays, my family usually tries for the weekend that is either before or after the actual birth date - whichever weekend is most convenient for everyone involved.
So, although I've got my superstitions, I suppose, this one isn't one of them!
I wonder whether anyone else on my flist has an opinion about this???!!! I'd welcome responses from any of you!
