Rating: PG
Genre: AU/Romance/Angst
Warning : It kinda has character death, but nothing too heavy.
Summary: Hankyung dies; and then he meets Heechul.
Death, if personified, is a woman.
She is diabolical, evil and cunning in her ways, she knows how to break relationships, she knows what’s right and when she has to act, she brings about emotions and feeling and strangely, she is beautiful.
But, Hankyung thinks, death is funny.
The sound of Zhou Mi calling out his name slowly dissipates, the feeling of Zhou Mi’s finger gripping onto his shoulder is ebbing away and he feels the darkness closing in on him. Strangely, he isn’t scared or angry, he feels relaxed like he knew this was going to happen, like he was already waiting for it.
“Gege…stay with me, please…Gege…”
Zhou Mi voice keeps coming in and out, in and out (and in and out) but there’s no use, Hankyung thinks, there is no use.
And at last, everything goes black.
-
He doesn’t know where he is, he doesn’t what this place is but he feels strong; like he just woke up from the best slumber. It’s dark and he’s absolute he can spots some trees and rocks, he wonders if this is a graveyard.
“Just so you know, this is not a graveyard.”
He swirls around and there is this person sitting on the bench, he has a sharp look, his legs are crossed and he’s flipping through a really old newspaper.”
“What?” Hankyung asks.
“This, it’s not a graveyard.”
“So what is this? Who are you?”
“Heechul.” The other man says, walking up to Hankyung. “I’m Kim Heechul and this is place where you most wanted to be when you were dying.”
Hankyung looks around the place, it doesn’t look a least bit familiar but there is something warm about the place. He looks around and immediately spots his apartment, the one he shared with Zhou Mi and the warm feeling in his chest expands.
“I’m Ha- “
“I know who you are.” Heechul says coldly, silencing Hankyung.
“Right. So what are we? Ghosts?”
“We are want we to be.” Heechul shrugs.
“I don’t think we’re ghosts.” Hankyung says, poking himself. “I feel pretty solid.”
Heechul stares at him till a smile creeps on to his face; “Did you really think you were going to be transparent with holes for eyes and the ability to fly?”
Hankyung silently nods and maybe it’s because Heechul is staring at him he feels stupid.
“Oh grow up, you’re not even alive anymore. Don’t keep thinking you’re going to be Casper.”
Hankyung almost pouts, because he had always wanted be Casper.
“Hey…hey, wait!” He calls out to Heechul, when the latter starts to walk away. “What am I supposed to be doing?”
“Figure it out yourself, Casper.” Heechul laughs and walks away.
Hankyung thinks he would have hated Heechul, if he was alive.
-
Hankyung just sits by the building and watches people pass by and he thinks its funny how people are living their life and he’s just there. He looks around and shoots up when he sees Zhou Mi walking into the building.
He’s been crying. Hankyung thinks as he quickly follows Zhou Mi into the elevator. He wants to touch Zhou Mi, just brush his hand lightly across the younger boy’s smooth skin.
And when he does try, he doesn’t feel anything, just as though he was waving his fingers in mid air. He sighs, because he knows Zhou Mi hasn’t felt anything either.
When he walks into the apartment, it’s just as he remembers it to be; cozy, clean, tidy, organized. And it’s home.
He watches how Zhou Mi aimlessly walks around the house, dropping his bag somewhere and slumping on the couch, he clutches a picture of Hankyung and himself and tears seem to just roll and somehow, Zhou Mi cries himself to sleep.
And Hankyung watches.
He watches it all and he wants to feel guilty, he wants to hug Zhou Mi, wants to just lie next to him like they used to.
He strides over to Zhou Mi’s sleeping figure and sits by him; “I am right here Zhou Mi…right here. Please don’t cry.” He whispers.
“You know, he can’t hear you.”
Hankyung yelps a bit and whips his head around and there’s Heechul again.
He’s sitting on the table top, swinging his legs lightly. Hankyung thinks he vaguely resembles a cat.
“What - how? How did you get here? When did you get here?”
“I can be wherever I want, whenever I want.” Heechul shrugs and pushes himself off the table. “C’mon, follow me.”
“Where?” Hankyung asks, not sure if he wants to follow this strange man, he wants to sit by Zhou Mi and watch him.
Heechul sighs, hands on his hips. “Clearly you are not good at figuring this out, are you Casper? Now don’t waste time, let’s go.”
Yes, Hankyung would have definitely hated Heechul.
-
“This…” Heechul says pointing to the slab of stone beneath him. “…is your grave.”
Hankyung frowns; “You’re stamping me….stop stamping me.”
Heechul pointedly ignores Hankyung and continues; “You were buried here a week ago.”
“A week?!” Hankyung asks, eyes wide with shock. “Didn’t I die just yesterday?”
“It feels like that…” Heechul says, getting off the slab. “But it’s been a week.”
Hankyung nods and stares at the grave, it’s weird he thinks. It’s like staring at yourself sleep only you know you are never getting up because you are staring at yourself sleep.
“Did you watch it?” Hankyung asks, quietly, not looking up at Heechul. “Did you watch my funeral?”
“Yes.” Heechul says and Hankyung looks at him.
“Were people sad?”
“Very.”
And Hankyung knows he isn’t lying because he hears it in Heechul’s voice.
Maybe, he wouldn’t have hated Heechul.
-
They are walking together on the highway, the same one where Hankyung died and Heechul is humming some song.
“So…what is this?” Hankyung asks. “What am I supposed to be figuring out?”
Heechul stops and stares at him; “You made someone unhappy and left him heartbroken and his happiness is now your responsibility.” And both him and Hankyung know he’s talking about Zhou Mi.
“But, how can I be responsible for his happiness when he won’t know I am around?”
“It just works like that.” Heechul shrugs. “You’ll figure it out pretty soon.”
Hankyung sighs and nods; clearly even death has it’s own responsibility.
-
The best thing about being dead is that you can be wherever you want, do whatever you want whenever you want because you are not there, but you really are.
“Harry is such a cock block.” Heechul snorted; “But I think Voldemort is hot.”
“You would.” Hankyung scoffs.
They are at someone’s watching a Harry Potter marathon because they have nothing better to do and besides, everything is free so they weren’t really complaining.
“I would do Ron you know, like do him.”
“No, I don’t know.” Hankyung says. “Now, shut up I am trying to watch a movie here.”
“It’s a happy ending.” Heechul shrugs, “Harry wins, Voldemort dies…blah blah happy ending.”
“Thank you” Hankyung rolls his eyes. “I didn’t know you’ve read the book.”
“I didn’t…I watched them shoot the movie.”
-
Heechul is sexy.
That’s the only way Hankyung can describe him, Heechul isn’t good looking, pretty, intelligent or smart.
He’s sexy.
Heechul is sexy because he is confident, confident about what he’s doing, about Hankyung, about himself, about everything.
There at some coffee shop together, Heechul is studying his nails, Hankyung is studying Heechul.
“Have you met others like us?” Hankyung asks.
“No…” Heechul shakes his head. “Just you…it’s funny.”
“How do you know all these people are alive? I mean if I was alive and able to see us I would say we’re pretty much alive.”
Heechul smiles and leans in; “I know because they feel.” He whispers.
Heechul is very, very, very, very sexy.
-
It’s when they are walking in the rain and watching the threads of the raindrops from the sky and not feeling it against their skin, Hankyung asks about Heechul’s death.
“If the same rule applies for you then, you must have made someone unhappy right?”
Heechul smiles holding out his palm to the raindrops, but still doesn’t say anything and Hankyung thinks he see something, something flicker in Heechul’s eyes.
“Tell me…” Hankyung says.
“See how the raindrops don’t touch us.” Heechul says quietly; “It means we are not real.”
Hankyung frowns; “That doesn’t make sense.”
“It will if you want it too…” Heechul says softly and looks up at Hankyung. “Don’t follow me, Casper.”
And before Hankyung realizes, Heechul’s walking out of sight again.
-
Hankyung doesn’t meet Heechul for the next two days or nights or however it is time is measured wherever he is at. It confuses Hankyung, because six months have passed by but he still feels like a young, baby, soul - or whatever he is.
He sighs and walks to Zhou Mi’s apartment and Zhou Mi’s still the same, he’s lost a lot of weight, he hasn’t been sleeping well and he hardly meets up with his friends and he is always cooped up in his apartment.
Hankyung wants to shake Zhou Mi, he wants to shout at him, tell him to snap out of it and start living a life he deserves because, hey, Hankyung isn’t coming back.
“God, Mi…just eat your Goddamn dinner.” Hankyung says quietly when he watches Zhou Mi curl up into a ball under the blanket and drift into sleep.
He walks around his neighborhood, smiling at familiar faces only to realize they are not really going to smile back at him. He sits on the swings at a nearby park and it’s swinging under him but it’s not really moving at all.
He eventually concludes that he misses Heechul. A lot.
He frowns at his grave as he sits on it; “Death is boring isn’t it, Hankyung? I am sorry I couldn’t make it more interesting an- “
“Are you seriously talking to your dead body?”
There’s that sharp voice and Hankyung swears if he had a beating heart it would have been dancing by now.
“I missed you…” he says, looking down at Heechul.
“Yeah, okay I have something to show you.” Heechul says and pulls Hankyung by the wrist.
-
“He’s really good looking, no I mean it, he’s really, really, really, really, good looking.”
“I know…” Heechul rolls his eyes
“And hey, you are just like two rows away from me, that’s so cool.”
Heechul clicks his tongue and shakes his head; “You child.”
They turn to look at the back at the young man who’s arrived at Heechul grave with a bouquet of flowers.
“Daisies…” Heechul says; “He knows how much I adore daisies.”
And Hankyung thinks he’s imagining the pride in Heechul’s voice.
They watch him place the flowers on the stone and tears shine in his eyes as he slowly runs a hand over Heechul’s grave.
“Hey Heechul Hyung…” he whispers. “Bet it’s really dirty in there, huh?”
Heechul smiles.
“I was just on my way to work and I just thought - today’s your birthday and I thought - I miss you Hyung, a lot. And I am - “
He chokes a bit, tears rolling down his cheeks.
“I am sorry, Hyung. “
He quickly wipes his tears and briskly walks out of the graveyard.
They remain silent for a while, Heechul staring at the daisies and Hankyung staring at Heechul.
Hankyung slowly pats Heechul on his shoulder and hold him for a moment.
“Happy birthday.” He says.
Heechul chuckles.
The irony.
-
“His name is Choi Siwon and he thinks I died because of him.”
“Oh…”
“Yeah…”
“Yeah, he called me when I was driving, I told him I would call him later but he wouldn’t listen and well - yeah.”
“Maybe that’s why we met, because we both died in a car accident.”
“Excuse me…I was driving an original BMW, unlike your second hand pick up truck.” Heechul rolls his eyes.
“Whatever, we have no one but each other.” Hankyung sighs
“Ew, you’re so greasy and corny.”
But Hankyung knows Heechul agrees.
-
They are in Zhou Mi’s cabin, Hankyung is watching Zhou Mi and Heechul is fixing his hair. It’s so silent, Hankyung can hear the whirring of Zhou Mi’s system and a butterfly fluttering somewhere.
“He’s going to go into depression pretty soon.” Hankyung says breaking the silence and Heechul jumps;
“Oh for the love of - I am already dead, how much more are you going to kill me?” He frowns but Hankyung remains oblivious.
“No, Heechul, this isn’t good.” Hankyung says, walking over to Heechul. “I have never seen him like that.”
Heechul stares at Hankyung for a moment and looks back at Zhou Mi and he’s about to say something but the door opens and there is a little fair boy standing by it, looking scared and wide eyed.
“Henry….” Hankyung breathes. “This isn’t good.”
“Why?” Heechul asks, brows furrowed as he stared from expressions changing on Zhou Mi’s face from being sleep deprived to being stiff.
“Gege…” Henry spoke this time. “Gege, they’re here.”
Hankyung and Heechul watch as Zhou Mi nods and makes his way out of the office and Hankyung follows Zhou Mi out, with an irritated Heechul behind him.
“Hey - Hey! Are you going to tell me what’s the matter?”
“This company, they want to buy Zhou Mi’s company from him but Zhou Mi isn’t ready to sell it - he was really worried about it and everything - so they started throwing in numbers, you know? And Zhou Mi - he finally gave in, I think.” Hankyung rushed through the details and they walked behind Zhou Mi.
“What’s the company’s name?”
“I don’t know- Some private company…something Purple-“
Heechul stopped dead in his tracks; “Purple Kim?”
“Yes, why?”
“That’s my company Siwon’s taken over.”
-
Hankyung thinks it’s a joke.
The way Siwon’s eyes have melted into Zhou Mi’s and the way they are blabbering nonsense and the Zhou Mi is blushing and the way Siwon is smiling.
It’s all an universal joke.
“What in hell are they doing?” Heechul snorts, when Siwon’s fingers brush against Zhou Mi’s and they both look away blushing.
“This is so messed.” Heechul shakes his head and walks away from the room. “I am never getting hold of Zhou Mi’s company now.”
“You’re dead, remember?” Hankyung laughs, following him.
“Whatever. Siwon’s stupid and he so irritating.”
Hankyung laughs again and Heechul hits the back of his head.
-
“This isn’t an official meeting, it’s a date. It’s a freaking date, Siwon. You pathetic loser…” Heechul shouts into Siwon’s ear while he is having dinner with Zhou Mi.
“Look at them Hankyung, look at them. This is not how you discuss your company’s future…this is what you do before you want to have sex.” Heechul says, pointing to the couple at the table, eating dinner under the moon light and making cozy talk.
“Whatever, Zhou Mi looks brighter than before.” Hankyung shrugs; “It’s okay then, I suppose…”
Heechul sighs and shakes his head; “If I was alive, I would have walked in and thrown a shoe at Siwon’s head, he’s doing this date all wrong.”
-
Apparently Heechul was wrong.
Siwon did his date very, very, very well.
“Wow….I didn’t know Siwon could that.” Hankyung whispers as they stare at the long limbed couple tangled together in between the sheets, fast asleep.
“I knew he could do that…just didn’t know it looked like this” Heechul whispers back.
“I wish we could have video taped it.”
“yeah…” Heechul whispers. “Why are we whispering? It’s not like they can hear us.”
Heechul stands up and straightens out his shirt; “I am going out…this is too weird.”
“I know, right?” Hankyung bites his lip. “This was like - hey, Hey!”
“What? What?” Heechul spins around. “What happened?”
“Heechul…look…” Hankyung points a shaky finger and Heechul follows Hankyung’s gaze and he’s eyes go wide immediately.
There’s no one on the bed, just pillows and a mess of sheets, but no Siwon, no Zhou Mi.
“They - they were…just there. I swear…” Hankyung stumbles on his words and Heechul feels his throat going dry
“They…were there…” Hankyung says, hand still held out, finger still pointing.
Heechul blinks and turns to Hankyung; “Hankyung...it’s happening....”
“What? What?” Hankyung asks.
“They’re forgetting us…Hankyung, they’re forgetting us!”
“You…mean….?”
“They’re happy.”
-
They are lying down on a grassy hill, the sky is fresh and blue and there’s not a single cloud in the sky and everything is warm and new around them.
“You were wrong….” Heechul mumbles, watching the blue sky.
“When?” Hankyung asks, fingers threading through the grass.
“We didn’t meet because of car accidents.”
“Huh? What? Then why did we meet?”
“We met because they were supposed to meet.” Heechul whispers with the wind and Hankyung smiles. Heechul’s fingers slip through his and for the first time in a long time, Hankyung feels happy; like this was how it was meant to be. He moves closer to Heechul, they are in a world of their own, a one they created, a one where no one else can enter.
It’s just them.
Death, if personified, is a woman.
She is evil, diabolical and she knows how to snatch away happiness. But she is beautiful, she cares and she knows what’s best and that there is always something good waiting.
