Regulation prison cells. There are very few single cells in prison and most cells are shared. Prisoners may be able to keep a number of items in their cells but should check with a prison officer first.
The prisoner must keep their cell/cubicle/personal space clean and most prisons will expect the prisoner to empty their rubbish daily. In a shared cell the prisoners are all responsible for the cleanliness of the cell floor, the cell furniture and the cell door and window areas.
For any ailments, or injury, the inmate will report to the infirmary, where he will be taken care of the extensive medical team, and kept under close guard observation.
Prisoners are granted four one-hour sessions a week outside in the yard. This time can be reduced without warning. Prisons on PI duty are allowed three extra one-hour sessions a week, to carry out various landscaping or housekeeping duties under the watchful eyes of guards.
Alternatively, prisoners not on PI duty, will be assigned to other jobs, such as laundry, kitchen and cleaning duties.
The cellblock is kept under close observation, and prisoners are required to be in their cell for 20 hours a day, with reprieve for meals, showers, and yard time.
The SHU (secured housing unit) is for prisoners awaiting sentencing, trial or release, and will only be used in those situations.
