Sad sad news

I know the bad news is spreading rapidly within our fandom but I'm going to take a moment to share it and pay tribute as well. According to Jim Beaver's myspace page, Kim Manners has passed away.

Yes, the loss is great for us, I can't imagine what it is for those close to him.

I lost my mom almost 4 years ago to lung cancer (that had spread to her brain). Those words always feel like an extra punch to the gut when I hear them together and I can only hope that Kim's suffering was minimal - for his sake and his friends and family.

He has a wonderful legacy though and all of us can take some comfort in that.

Hi, May. I still can't believe it, and I agree, it must be terrible for his family and friends. :( And I know we didn't know him personally and that The X-Files and SPN are 'just television shows'. But when I had a hard day at work or was sleep-deprived as a new mommy, Kim Manners was there. Maybe for a smile, maybe for some distraction, but the rare time I've had for myself, he's made infinitely better, and I can't help but think that our love of those shows must have been inpsired at least in part by the kind of person he was. I'm sure he'll be missed by more people than he ever could have imagined. :(

Just wonderfully put and so very true. I fully believe that it's thanks to Kim's vision (and JDM of course) that we were given the complex and layered character of John Winchester as we saw him evolve on screen. Given Kripke's and Sera's comments over the years, their John would've been a lot less interesting, let alone appealing and sympathetic.

Kim brought out the best in Jensen and Jared and it breaks my heart that they've lost this mentor/friend/patriarch who made them feel safe when they ripped open their hearts and souls and exposed them to the camera. His loss is profound and I so hope the SPN we see in the future will live up to the legacy Kim leaves behind.

Well, like you, anyone who contributed to the character of John Winchester can consider me a huge fan. It is really sad for Jensen and Jared, but I think sometimes people come into our lives just long enough to change us and teach us the lessons we need to learn. :( I'd bet Kim's presence will continue to influence the show and his family (blood and otherwise) for the duration, and really, I can't think of a better way for someone to be remembered.

There's supposed to be a moment of silence Thursday before the show, and I plan on honoring that. *hugs you*

Thanks for telling me about the moment of silence. I hadn't heard.

Is this something organized by fandom or is the show actually going to go dark for a minute?

Either way, I plan to honor it too.
