Introducing... Cannon

As some of you know, at the end of my VanCon trip I was going to be making a detour on my way home, stopping in Winnipeg to pick up the newest addition to our family. And here he is…

Colin vom Slaney-Vale, aka Cannon!

Cannon is a Deutsch-Drahthaar, just like our Cooper. With Coop turning 8 in November, we wanted to get a pup for hubby so that when Cooper started to slow down in his bird-dog duties, hubby would have a well-trained 2 year old ready to ease the load and eventually take over as Coop headed into “retirement”.

With Cannon & Coop’s breed club, the pups are registered with names prior to being old enough to go home, hence the name Colin which we didn’t choose. Most have German sounding handles and/or kennel names - his mom is Frida vom Erthal (aka Erna) and his dad is Colt vom Entenmoor (and Cooper is Cammo vom Flutwasser). We didn’t want to use Colin and, since my hubby didn’t agree with naming him Colt after his sire like I’d wanted (and that’s without clueing in as to why Colt would really appeal to me LOL), I suggested another “gun” name:  Cannon. Hubby liked it, so that’s what we’re calling the little dude.

Cannon’s been home a few weeks now and I adore him but he’s gonna be the death of me! Far from the perfect puppy, he is not going to be easy when it comes to minor issues such as house-training, chewing/nipping, and sleeping through the night. In fact, at this point he may well be the most difficult pup we’ve raised since Cody, who we brought home 20 years ago. Cannon’s still a baby (11 weeks today) and is taking to that role with gusto. He doesn’t sleep through the night, waking us up to go outside around 2 and 4:30 in the morning. Which is a good thing, I know. Better that than having accidents in his crate but I am soooo damn tired! I am definitely looking forward to the day he can hold his bladder through the night. My bet is that’ll come in about a month’s time, no more than 2. It’s just surviving until then that’s the problem ;).

I started Puppy Kindergarten classes with him Monday and it was a riot. Youngest in a class of 5, Cannon falls right in the middle in terms of size, though I suspect he might race past #2 Cara, a 16 wk old German Shorthaired Pointer female, by the time we graduate. He doesn’t have a hope in hell of catching 16 wk old Rocky though (a beautiful big male Mastiff)! My best buddy J is going to come to class as often as possible and will take photographs. I’ll certainly share any that are worthy.

Here are a few more pictures of the little chunk, the first of which was taken his first full day with us (@ 8.5 wks) with the others taken on Tuesday:

More on his exploits in the future I’m sure ;)
