Internet bullies, just plain bullies, and a SW princess's weight loss

OK, by now we've probably all heard that Carrie Fisher has become the newest spokes-celebrity for Jenny Craig and gone public with her "battle of the bulge." I'm not an especial fan of Jenny Craig, or any commercial weight loss program for that matter, but never mind. What annoys me is the attempts to retroactively claim that the cruel remarks ( Read more... )

Oh Christ, people are actually saying that? Mocking people for their weight doesn't do anything but drive them into self-destructive habits and lowered self-esteem. If there's something we actually need in this country, it's more body-positive culture, especially for women.

Supposedly, the trigger that set Karen Carpenter down the road of the anorexia that eventually killed her was that she read some critic's review which referred to "Richard Carpenter and his chubby sister."

And yes, people are saying that, either directly or by saying stuff like, "Well, if those remarks made Ms. Fisher decide to get healthy, they're not so bad."

I've never cared for retroactive, "I really meant well" B.S. justification for cruelty. No, you did not mean well; you meant to be cruel.

I hadn't heard about Carrie doing the Jenny Craig thing. I'm disappointed. I think it's fraught with unrealistic expectations. *sigh* It's not like she was hugely overweight anyway. Plus her meds wouldn't help.

She talked about her meds and the amount of weight she gained in "People" magazine. The meds certainly don't help, and she attributed some of her weight gain to that, but not all of it.

Being as short as she is, any weight gain could double its effects on her health as well as her appearance. My great-grandmother, who was about 4'9" (really), had quite a few health problems when she gained weight in her dotage, and she didn't even gain all that much.

So, well...I just hope Carrie gets healthy.
