How was the movie? I saw the preview and thought it looked a little dull, but your post had made me consider seeing it again. I agree, I loved the poem. It's nice to read poetry that's a little filthy, risqué. and openly vulgar, as opposed to poems like "The Lady's Dressing Room" which is a little more subtle and elegant. Was John Wilmot famous for his work, or famous for his obsenity? How did people receive him?
I really enjoyed the film becuase the character John Wilmot was great to watch. Johnny Depp's performance made the film, but then again I do have a huge bias toward my 'Golden Boy'. The poem I provided vividly portrays Wilmot in all his glory, his drunken, sexful banter. He is famous for his position of being the second Earl of Rochester, a close friend of the King assigned by the King himself to write a work the people would remember his famous reign by. He is more famous, or associated with the obscene so yes his work does stand out. As for people receiving him either they loved him or loathed him (like the King did when he exiled him). Other then that I am not sure how he was received by the public, I am sure some were offended and some were amused, either way its what Wilmot would have wanted.
Interesting post Lesley-Anne, it's made me want to see that movie. Unfortunately I live in Pickering so it's not playing here and I'll have to go downtown. *shakes fists at Famous Players Pickering 8* I too find Johnny Depp very attractive as well as a great actor. I loved him in Pirates of the Caribbean and I can't wait for the sequel. Ciao,
Pickering! That place is rather special to my heart. However, being from Barrie, and addicted to night-life as I am, I totally understand your vexation. All that town has is a mall...and a nuclear power plant. :D
As for the Libertine...I love Johnny Depp, but I don't think I will see this movie. I'm at odds with the movies right now, and the wigs are rather grotesque. Perhaps I'll change my mind. It all borders on the success of V for Vendetta this weekend.
Hey I just wanted to comment on the fact that you are listening to Neil Young. Good job!! I get excited when anyone appreciates Neil cos he's the best.
