When I first read the third section of "The Waste Land" that you quoted I honestly had no idea of what was going on, apparently it was sex! I suppose I just don't associate unfeeling indifference to sex and I still don't understand how anyone does. Obviously I know people do, but I don't and I think it is a horrible shame to deny oneself the opportunity to engage in such an act with someone s/he is madly in love with. It seems to me that to do it for any other reason would be disrespectful to the body. But Eliot cleverly uses this image to display the perversion and subsequent sterility within the waste land and I only know this because of the information we were given in lecture and tutorial. So, I can understand why you may not like this poem, it is truly the most difficult poem I have read yet.
Aw Janice. Your lovely innocence. :D I agree with you. Intimacy ought to be well...intimate, no?
And Lesley-Ann: Love is what I got. :) And you don't have to like The Waste Land, or even understand it. Just read it all the way through without ever checking the footnotes. Don't get upset if you don't know what's happening. Just let the poem flow over you like an excellent melody. An exercise in poetic relaxation. :D
I love Sublime. I have such fond memories of when I was first introduced to this band way back when. They will always hold a special place in my heart. Such talent sadly gone, Bradley will be missed.
I have to agree with you about 'The Wasteland' Lesley-Anne, as I didn't find it all the interesting myself. The third section is interesting though and I caught myself going, "push him away you idiot" to the women when I was reading it. Then again I tend to yell at fictional characters a lot Hmmmmm... Anyhoo, I enjoyed the lyrics you supplied, especially Mary. I'm not exactly sure why, I just do *shrugs* Wonderful job!
