lately, i've been thinking about how to make the most out of practice. there are lots of great people to fence, but i find myself fencing too much to win bouts and not taking enough risks

Hmmm ... great questions ... which i'd love to hear you think about more ... i'm going to think too. For me i would add, i have too much pride ... and sometimes can't just sit back and not care what others think of me when i keep not hitting or trying the same thing over and over again ... yes, i should get over it ... and i know if i get over it in practice it will bear fruit in my competing as well. psyched to see you bring it up cause i've been thinking about that a TON! peace molly
Maybe you need to practice two things in pairs: the primary move, and then the secondary alternative: i.e.: counter-six direct to the hand; then counter-six with a coupe. Or practice a hand-to-shoulder fleche with a hand-to-toe touch.
But if you come the realization that a particular move will never work on a particular opponent, you may have learned something important. If you understand why it doesn't work, then you will know that you should not try it on any other similar fencer.
Either way, you are still improving. Edison was asked whether he was frustrated by his thousands of failures when trying to invent the light bulb. He claimed that he was not frustrated because these "failures" helped him eliminate how NOT to do something. Sometimes, even in fencing, it is good to find out what DOESN'T work.
