- CHARACTER INFORMATION
NAME: Maya Fey
CODENAME:
SERIES/SOURCE: Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney
AGE: 17
GENDER: Female
ROLE: Student
BACKGROUND:
Maya grew up in Kurain Village, a tiny township located in the mountains nearby Los Angeles, California. One of the esteemed Fey family of spirit mediums, she has been training since childhood to hone her skills as a channeler. All women in the Fey family are born with the ability to channel spirits into their bodies and thereby allow them to communicate with the living. Maya's long-missing mother, Misty Fey, was the last Master of the Kurain, and following the murder of Maya's older sister Mia, Maya is set to inherit the title of Master.
A frequent visitor to the city of Los Angeles itself, Maya had spent the past year working as an assistant to defense attorney Phoenix Wright, her sister Mia's protege. She met Phoenix when Maya wound up implicated in the murder of her own sister, and Phoenix defended her and cleared her of any wrongdoing. Though the death of her sister still weighs heavily on her heart, Maya befriended Phoenix and helped him solve numerous murder cases before deciding to return to Kurain and finish her training as a spirit medium.
Of course, this is Maya we're talking about, so things certainly can't go as normally as hoped. One day in the middle of channeling practice, Maya fell into an ordinary trance and did something quite extraordinary-- she channeled the soul of a living person, one of the other acolytes sitting nearby her. Since Kurain mediums deal solely in the spirits of the dead, channeling the soul of a living person was up to this point thought to be impossible.
After the panic had subsided, the soul had left Maya's body and the acolyte in question was found to be unharmed (shaken, but unharmed), Maya was immediately placed under observation to find the cause of her incredible feat. A healthy dose of science shed a little light on the situation-- the women of the Fey family had all inherited a mutant gene that enabled their powers, and Maya was the first and so far only one to reach the next step in the gene's evolution.
A call came and offered to place Maya within the Xavier Institute in order to help her learn to control these newfound powers, and though the elders of Kurain were loathe to let their future master leave for the outside world, Maya was excited for a change of scenery and a chance to find some new adventures in her new home, before the traditions and ceremonies that dictated the life of the Kurain Master were thrust upon her.
PERSONALITY:
A terminally silly teenage spirit medium with an epic appetite and a playful disposition. Talking to Maya is quite an adventure because you never can tell what she's going to say next. Odds for a goofy non sequitur are very high. She loves adventures, learning new things, making new friends and exploring-- and also attracts trouble like a magnet.
Maya walks the thin line between scatterbrained and focused. Sarcasm either flies over her head or comes out of her own mouth if she happens to be confused or irritated. Her statements are either off the wall or surprisingly insightful and observant. She has the classic Fey trait of always wanting to help people, though her ideas on how to do so are usually bizarre and she doesn't seem to understand when people don't want her assistance. As a general rule Maya will either endear herself to you or annoy the living hell out of you. She's quite a strange girl. She also grew up in a village full of women who make their livings by talking to dead people. So bizarre things like the supernatural or mutants don't bother her all that much. In fact, her childhood has given her a bizarre sort of zen about the concept of death in general, which is a little weird coming from a teenage girl.
Her favorite TV show is the Steel Samurai, and she frequently quotes it, recommends it to others and tries to live by the Steel Samurai's philosophy. She's hopelessly addicted to any number of live action children's martial-arts-based shows in a similar vein. Maya also loves to eat. She's partial to ramen. And steaks, she has a second stomach for them. And ice cream, she has a second stomach for ice cream too. Her favorite food, though, is burgers-- she has at least four stomachs for those. She is pretty bad with money and frequently resorts to borrowing money from her friends. Though thanks to her friendly nature, she does have a lot of friends. Her closest friends in the world are her eight-year-old cousin Pearl Fey and Phoenix Wright, the lawyer who defended her against the charges of her sister's murder.
APPEARANCE:
Maya has light skin, browny-green eyes and long, long jet-black hair, partially styled into a bun (NOT a topknot!) while the bottom is bundled together. She wears the clothes of a Kurain channeling acolyte with a lilac-colored tunic underneath a bright purple robe, all tied about her waist with a thick magenta obi. She wears a tan-colored magatama on a necklace of large white pearls, and two large purple beads fasten to her bangs. She always wears sandals and a black leather string tied around both her wrists as bracelets.
POWERS:
The women in Maya's family traditionally inherit mutant psychic abilities, particularly the ability to commune with and channel the souls of the dead into their bodies. Maya herself has a mutation of this mutation in which she can also channel the souls of the living into her body. When Maya channels a soul, her body transforms and takes on the shape of whoever she is calling. The spirit is in complete control of Maya's body-- her own soul "disappears" and she becomes unaware of what's happening around her-- she cannot speak, think or control her actions. For this reason, spirit channeling is particularly dangerous and Maya knows better than to use her abilities recklessly.
As a result of her abilities, Maya is particularly vulnerable to psychic or supernatural influence. She's sensitive to ghosts or other apparitions of dead people, any form of telepathy being used on her, and unfortunately, she's easily possessed.
