Character Name: Maya Fey
Series: Phoenix Wright
Gender: Female
Age: 18
Species: Human
Sexuality: Presumably straight, though she's way too immature to think seriously about relationships right now
Appearance: Like her big sister Mia, Maya has light skin, browny-green eyes and long, long hair, though hers is jet black and usually partially styled into a bun (NOT a topknot!) while the bottom is bundled together. She wears the clothes of a Kurain channeling acolyte with a lilac-colored tunic underneath a bright purple robe, all tied about her waist with a thick magenta obi. She wears a tan-colored magatama on a necklace of large white pearls, and two large purple beads fasten to her bangs. She always wears sandals and a black leather string tied around both her wrists as bracelets.
Personality: Though she's at the edge of adulthood with a lot of responsibilities resting on her shoulders, Maya is nothing if not a child at heart. She's excitable and eccentric with a great love of good food, new friends, and anything to do with the Steel Samurai. She's nearly constantly cheerful and curious, always thrilled to learn something new or explore in a new place. It's sometimes hard to believe Maya is as old as she is, since she can act rather childish and has a somewhat wild imagination that inspires some truly bizarre leaps in logic-- and it's tough to tell if she's being silly or serious at any given time.
However silly she may act, though, don't underestimate her intelligence. Maya is sometimes slow on the uptake but when she settles down and concentrates, her ever-buzzing brain is quite good at deciphering information and trying to put it together. Like her sister, she is tenacious and will never give up on a cause she believes in or a friend in need, even putting herself in harm's way to protect the things important to her. Other people's problems quickly become hers (whether they like it or not) and her solutions for them range from genuinely helpful to ridiculously far-fetched-- but you can bet she'll do whatever she can to help. Unfortunately, she's the least subtle person in the world and has a hard time picking up on undertones and hints-- she's extremely blunt and asks wildly inappropriate or uncomfortable questions with little hesitation. Rest assured that she is simply curious and never trying to offend-- she doesn't have a mean bone in her body.
Maya gets along very well with children (naturally, being a big kid herself) and adores animals. Her favorite things in no particular order are her sister, food, her friends, food, the Steel Samurai, food and burgers.
Abilities:
A disciple of the Kurain Channeling Technique (in fact, the daughter of its master), Maya's chief special skill is her ability to channel the dead. Taking a spirit into her body, she changes appearance and gives a voice to the deceased. This talent gives her a little special insight into matters of the spiritual and supernatural-- she can sense ghosts or other such phenomena better than a normal person. Since she is just an apprentice, Maya is not very skilled at channeling yet and usually saves it for an emergency. She also cannot control the spirit once they have merged together-- she has actually been avoiding using her skills lately due to a recent incident...
Aside from her spiritual powers, Maya is fairly good at sensing other people's feelings and cheering them up if they need it. She is a decent sketch artist (though not terribly good at crafts) and learning how to cook.
Weaknesses:
Maya's personality will either endear her to you or annoy the hell out of you. Her immaturity, blunt tendencies and inability to pick up on hints make her difficult to talk to sometimes, and she often unintentionally insults or drives people away simply by asking questions or speaking without thinking first.
It's hard to make her sad or angry, but once she breaks she breaks hard and she usually needs help and reassurance before she can bounce back. She often blames herself even for things that she couldn't possibly have done, and she considers failing to help somebody a great personal failure. She will easily burn out or throw herself in harm's way in trying to help another person.
On a lighter note, Maya's greatest weakness is probably her fondness for food. She can seem rather gluttonous and her cravings for burgers and ramen are never, ever satisfied.
Manhattanite or outsider?
Outsider. Maya suddenly woke up in Manhattan one day... but she is clearly the same Maya from the same LA that Mia left.
History:
Maya and Mia Fey were the daughters of Misty Fey, the Master of the Kurain Channeling Technique who disappeared when Maya was too young to remember. With their father dead, the sisters grew up mainly on their own, with Maya living and caring for herself independently by as young as 8 when Mia left the village to go to law school. With Misty out of the picture and Mia having abdicated the position, Maya became the heir to the position of Master-- one day, the Kurain technique would be fully in her hands and she would be the leader of the village.
Though Mia was off at law school, Maya remained very close with her and visited her frequently, becoming friends with her student, Phoenix Wright. When Mia left for Manhattan, a 17-year-old Maya took it upon herself to become Phoenix's assistant. helping him out with many cases and splitting her time between Los Angeles and Kurain Village. Unfortunately, Maya did not sense darkness in the shadows of her home village-- her aunt, Morgan Fey, was plotting to take Maya out and force her from the position of Master in favor of Pearl, Maya's beloved 8-year-old cousin. The plot was set in motion in an incident where Maya was led to believe she had murdered a man while possessed in the middle of a channeling. Though Phoenix eventually proved her innocent and sent her scheming aunt to prison, Maya was severely shaken by the incident and since then has not attempted to channel, nor trained any further. In the meantime she continued assisting Phoenix and now served as an older sister figure to Pearl, who depended on Maya as the only family she had left.
A few months later, Maya was waking up on a typical day, planning her schedule-- in the morning she'd make pancakes, then clean up around Phoenix's office, then go out for burgers and make Nick watch her new Pink Princess DVD box set. She wandered into the bathroom to fetch her toothbrush-- before realizing she was not in the bathroom, but in the ruins of someone's apartment in the middle of the rubble of Manhattan. Whoops.
