the thing that comes to mind is in lady of the forest. Like the scene where Robin's nightmares torment him, and she handles it, very earthily...
so simple, & so cliched, but when it's done well- when it actually means something- well, it just seems so much more realistic than most other romance ideals, and so personal...
or! *gasps* If you haven't read tolkien's lay of lethian yet, you must- though not his utmost spectacular writing it is still possibly one of the most romantic things i have ever read; i read that shortly after LoTR and sometimes I think I love it more; the entire thing is- swoonworthy. If only I knew how to swoon.
i could probably recite the first few stanzas, actually, and scattered selections, i've read it so many times...

I like the movie for more reasons, but there are some nice moments in "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" that I like. For instance, when Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet are in bed and she asks if she's pretty, and as the memory unfolds, he grasps to keep that one.
I would consider the Princess Bride movie but, really, it's so much more than just a love story. There's "fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love, miracles."
