It's amazing how purified you feel after reading good writing. Feeling every word to be true, the exact right word for that place in that sentence. Like Adam somehow getting just the right names for all the animals. It's so soothing, when a writer can sweep you up and carry you away with them so unerringly that you don't need to fill in the ( Read more... )

Janet Fitch has a new book out, lady who wrote White Oleander -- ignore the fact that it was an Oprah book (also ignore the wretched movie), woman can WRITE.

Isn't it funny how there's sort of a chic & a non-chic to fiction writers? Not even necessarily having to do with talent, word choice, or story structure....seems like it's more subject matter that makes them highbrow or lowbrow, y'know? Like people snivelling at Tom Wolfe for writing contemporary satire that has sex & swearing, when the man knows how to structure a story & keep it moving along while building characters better than half the people out there writing confusing sulky "modern literature" about hermaphrodites & incest. Not to say that Tom Wolfe is God. Just as an example.

....I don't know what that was apropos of, but I'm done now O:-) What've you been reading?

Well, I just started the fantasy book Joe gave me for Christmas (the one he read at our wedding). I think it will be enjoyable. I finished Harry Potter 6. I started While Europe Slept (I got tired of being constantly asked if I'd read it). It's not as bad as I'd expected, so far. Don't know what I'll read on the NZ trip. Preferably small books that fit easily into luggage.
