Insult to Injury (Dean, Sam, Castiel, PG-13) Part 1/7maskedfangirlMarch 31 2010, 00:37:15 UTC
Note: This turned into a 3700k word not-a-comment-fic because I couldn't seem to stop writing. Also, it wound up being kinda Dean-centric. I'm posting it all anyway, a scene at a time, and you'll just have to deal like the brave little soldier I know you are.Dean is having trouble expressing just how much he hates witches. He hates witches so much it feels like flames rising up the sides of his face when he thinks about them. He hates witches so much he almost sort of doesn’t regret torturing their souls in Hell. He hates witches so much he wants to make a children’s birthday party game called Pin My Boot on the Witch’s Goddamn Hag Face. He hates witches more than he hates salad. Dean rants about how much he hates witches on the drive out of San Antonio while Sam makes bitchface in the passenger seat, stiff-legged and muddy from the failed hunt

Insult to Injury (Dean, Sam, Castiel, PG-13) Part 2/7maskedfangirlMarch 31 2010, 00:38:17 UTC
The next day, Castiel is in the motel room when Sam and Dean get back from interviewing witnesses. Dean’s eyes slide over him and then back to Sam, who he’s starting to hate almost as much as salad right now, because the guy hasn’t freaking shut up since they left the last victim’s building. He’s like one of those refrigerator magnet sets, and he’s just forming different sentences with the same bunch of words over and over again. Motive. Human sacrifices. Lore. Virgins. Blah, blah, blah. Meanwhile, it’s so sticky-hot out that Dean wouldn’t be offended by a Hell comparison, and the air conditioner in the window is sputtering and wheezing like the elderly father of the landlord they just interviewed

Dean’s actually kind of grateful for his stupid brother right now. They’re both still irritable from the heat and bickering across the room every other breath, but the moment it looked like Castiel wasn’t going to die on them immediately, Sam got out his laptop and dove into research mode. It makes Dean feel like at least one of them is doing something to help. He’s spent the last half-hour painstakingly peeling off angel clothes and bandaging wounds that won’t stop spreading, while Castiel looks up at him groggily with this face. It’s like a little Sammy face, an “I’m sick and I’m counting on you for soup” face, and Christ, Dean doesn’t know what to do do with that when it’s coming from the being that ripped him out of Hell. He draws a wet rag across the fresh scrapes on the side of Castiel’s face and wipes blood off his cracked lips

Insult to Injury (Dean, Sam, Castiel, PG-13) Part 4/7maskedfangirlMarch 31 2010, 00:40:00 UTC
Dean starts to feel really bad a couple hours after Sam’s revelation. Sure, it’s a goddamn witch that did this to Castiel, and as far as they know, angels can’t die from curses, but…the guy’s in pain. And he’s so obviously not used to being in pain. It’s probably why he’s so quiet. Dean remembers the first time he ever had a stomach wound - he was seventeen or eighteen, torn up by a freaking werewolf, and for days afterward he laid in the motel bed with his dad fussing over him, not really saying much because what was there to say aside from “Wow, I can’t believe how much this hurts”? It had freaked Sam out royally. They hadn’t shared a bed since Sam was in diapers, and yet those first couple of nights, Sam had curled up next to him, staring at him until he fell asleep as if he just wanted to make sure Dean would still be there when he woke up. Little freak

Insult to Injury (Dean, Sam, Castiel, PG-13) Part 5/7maskedfangirlMarch 31 2010, 00:40:32 UTC
Dean takes on the morning coffee run just for the chance to exercise his vocal cords. He sings along to Zeppelin in the Impala, criticizes some doofy looking townies under his breath, and trades sarcastic jabs with the bored looking girl at the counter of the Dunkin’ Donuts. It doesn’t make the guilt go away, but it does get him feeling a little less pent up

Insult to Injury (Dean, Sam, Castiel, PG-13) Part 6/7maskedfangirlMarch 31 2010, 00:41:35 UTC
Sam’s good at this whole “nice” thing. He probably took classes on it at college. Even while he’s got his eyes on his research, his mouth is running, paying Castiel easy compliments about awesome things he’s done in the past or being nice to Dean or - much to Dean’s chagrin - singing. Singing some 80’s crap he probably also picked up at college. Dean has to bite the inside of his cheek to keep from saying anything, because while he’s all for music benefiting the angel, the Smiths, Sammy? Really

Insult to Injury (Dean, Sam, Castiel, PG-13) Part 7/7maskedfangirlMarch 31 2010, 00:44:46 UTC
It’s maybe the best plan that Sam has ever had. Normally Dean wouldn’t be too keen on luring a powerful witch back to their motel room, and in plain sight of the guy she cursed to die a slow, painful death, no less, but this? He’s gotta hand it to Sam. This is a touch of genius

Insult to Injury (Dean, Sam, Castiel, PG-13) Part AW FUCK WHY CAN'T I COUNT RIGHT 8/7maskedfangirlMarch 31 2010, 00:45:46 UTC
On the drive out of San Antonio, the heat is still stifling, but with the windows rolled down in the Impala, it doesn’t feel so bad. Dean raps his fingers in rhythm to “Thunderstruck” against the car door, the hot metal making his skin prickle pleasantly. They’ve been riding silent except for AC/DC since they left the motel, and it’s kind of nice, in a tense sort of way. It’s Dean who decides to break the quiet

Oh, man, this is AWESOME. It made me ache in the best way. In the beginning and middle when Dean was being a dick I just wanted to scream at him. But yeah, you get in a habit and it's hard to break, it's hard to know what else to do, and he's been so lost lately that my heart broke for him too. And then him hugging Castiel and singing to him and all...oh, awesome. The ending with witch was creepy, and I sort of love that the worst Cas was willing to do was "I don't like you," LOL.

Okay, so. There are a lot of things I love about this fic. The curse (though that was the prompt, you really made it your own), the way the three of them interacted, the solution. The big stuff.
But what I really loved above all else was your exploration of how Sam&Dean's relationship has changed over the last few seasons, from the "Jerk" "Bitch" (a.k.a. "I love you" "No, I love you, bitch") of season one to the place they are now, where they probably still love each other, but it's a habit, not a feeling. Or at least not a conscious feeling.
And then, here at the end, there is hope! Awesome.
Also: singing Zeppelin heals angels. I always knew Robert Plant had superpowers.

Oh, I really loved how you wrote this! Not only do I like whumped!Castiel (and oh, the whumping here was delicious), but I like how you used the prompt as a vehicle for Dean and Sam's devolving relationship over the course of the show, and as a tool to fix it!

Seeing someone he cared about get hurt was a powerful reminder to mind his words.
