Safe House (Castiel (Sam), gen)vikkiMarch 30 2010, 03:31:28 UTC
The angels know where Bobby Singer lives. They know that the Winchesters frequent the home. When Lucifer unleashes a horde of reconstituted souls on Sioux Falls, Dean gets drunk and wonders, "Why don't those dicks just jump us there, 'xactly? They just stupid?"
"No; they are busy. Michael and Lucifer are confident that you will take your roles," Castiel explains. "The war rages without you."
"Fuck them," Dean says.
"Yes," Castiel says.
"What about Zach," Dean asks. "He likes fucking with us, huh."
"I don't know." Castiel mulls it over. "That's a concern."
So Castiel paints.

In India, ink was once called masi; it was made of tar and pitch, and ashes from bones. Castiel uses this mix, but with the ashes of angel wings, scraped from the floor of a warehouse, although Uriel's body is long since gone. Uriel disapproved the writing of humans, because it lent them power. Castiel appreciates the irony, but doesn't dwell on it

Oh my lord.
See, I have this *thing* in my mind that Cas was the quiet little bookworm up in Heaven, hiding in the holy library stacks reading when he was supposed to be out practicing his smiting and thunderous voice. (Not that he isn't a capable warrior as well; he has to be, or he'd be dead long since.) Born of one of Castiel's very first acts onscreen being picking up a book & leafing through it, and a Misha interview where he talks about hanging out in his university's basement library reading while at school.
So fic that plays on the idea of what he knows, and how cleverly he puts this knowing to practical use, just knocks the breath out of me.
The ink made of angel wing ashes. THIS. RIGHT HERE.
empty-of-God. ALSO THIS.
The benedictions, and the warnings that burn, and the fingerprint of his writing.
And I like how after creating his little world of safety for his boys, he rests.
I don't know how to make those little hearts, so pretend there's a row of them here :)

;alsdja;sd oh, wow, we are totally on the same page regarding Castiel as a scholar first and a warrior second. A long time ago aesc wrote a (Dean/Castiel) fic where Castiel told Dean he was tasked to create the wards, sigils, and words that would fight against the Enemy. After reading that fic, I never looked back. I think he knows - and maybe even created - all kinds of powerful scripts, blasphemous sigils, and magical traps. (In fact, I tend to think that those sigils which fight angels were originally created to fight the Fallen angels who were cast down with Lucifer!) I was also struck by Castiel's first voluntary non-combative action was to leaf through a book (and he does it again later), and also when he takes such offense at Uriel suggesting his Devil's Trap was broken by Alastair. I think he likes learning about what humans have created, like an archeologist observing ancient primitive cultures. I wonder how he felt about those two scholars discovering some small part of Enochian

Ah, I love the sound of that aesc fic. You must be right about how the angel-banishing sigils came about-- why would such a thing exist, except for their fight against their Fallen brothers?
The nerdy little guy with wings had to have been on the committee!
In Monster at the end of this book Cas is flipping through a Winchester Gospel and I have serious *issues* with that episode, Sneaky!Cas notwithstanding, but the fact that he's sneaking a bit of a read makes it better. I think there's a third time but I'm having brainfreeze.
Cas & books makes me unreasonably happy and if I ever had the nerve, I'd ask Misha if those moments were directed to him or improvised by him.
And yes! the devil's trap-- "I made it", which is probably me projecting but always sounded more professional pride than just "I built it" or "constructed it". He *made* the word-magic that makes traps work.
(Stop it, dude, you are making me seriously want to write the fic about That Time Castiel Went to Hell and Pulled Dean From Perdition!)Doooooo itttttt

Don't read this reply until you've watched 5.17vikkiApril 9 2010, 14:13:47 UTC
And Show just continues to feed into my feelings on scholar!Cas!
I think there's a third time but I'm having brainfreeze. WELL NOW THERE'S DEFINITELY A THIRD TIME because lol drunk!Castiel reading books with Sam. You said that you would ask Misha if those moments were directed to him or not, well - I will so ask that if the opportunity comes up at con. Because I love this continuity.
When I finally have time this weekend, I will totally work on the Castiel Goes To Hell fic. ♥

YES, ANOTHER CAS/BOOKS MOMENT! The drunkenness squeezed my heart, but flipping through musty old books was love.
I can't wait to hear what he says if you're able to ask, that would be fantastic, thank you!
Looking forward to Cas in Hell (that sounds kinda wrong...), because I always pictured him as the unnoticed little foot soldier who sneaked in around the back while the heavy hitters were leading the assault from the front line and now I'm also picturing Cas getting through locks and solid walls by way of his wards... Mmmmm :)
