Fucking mages, am I right? Going around learning blood magic, makin' contracts with demons, turning into abominations and slaughtering villagers? Somebody should put a stop to that shit! And after her apostate sister became an abomination and killed her whole family/village, Meredith Stannard decided to do just that. She joined up with everybody's favorite mage-hunters, the Templars, and quickly rose through the ranks fueled by her zealous desire to lock those sissy robey guys up in a tower where they can't hurt us good folk. Sure, some people will tell you that maybe those robey guys have "rights" and "don't

This is not to say that Meredith is completely obsessed with mage-hunting, just mostly. Though she puts up a strong front of absolute stubborn resolution, in private Meredith has a lot of doubts about the morality of her own actions. Even during the final battle, when she's been driven insane by her lyrium sword, she struggles against her own madness, wondering aloud if she's doing the right thing and if she should lay down her blade. (Not that she does, but hey, it's the thought that counts.) Extreme though she may be, even Meredith has her limits as to how badly she thinks mages should be treated: she flatly rejects Ser Alrick's "Tranquil Solution" in Act 2, stating that mages at least deserve the chance to prove they're not monsters
