[Well, there's really only one thing Aisling wants. But she isn't very good at writing, so she sends a crude drawing of a forest along with another crude drawing of a boy with red hair in brown robes and a white cat with differently-coloured eyes. Below those she writes, "i wnat to go hoem" (sic).
Though she has a feeling that her wish won't be granted--not right now, anyway--it makes her feel better when she sends it.]
Aisling will receive a small letter in a stocking on Christmas morning.
Dear Aisling,
My elves tell me you've been a very good girl this year!
Nollaig Shona Duit,
Saint Nick
In addition to the letter, there will be a key that will fit in the lock on her bedroom door. If she opens the door with this key, she will be back home in her forest, but as an invisible observer.
Time will move quickly. She'll see Brendan growing older and older, and will eventually watch as he's murdered by Viking raiders. Centuries will pass as she'll watch her forest change, burn down and grow again, and see humans come and go. Finally, she'll watch as it's cut down, paved over, and replaced with a town that looks very much like Mayfield.
Though she has a feeling that her wish won't be granted--not right now, anyway--it makes her feel better when she sends it.]
