action;

[Wednesday morning is a particularly warm day in Mayfield. With the sun in the sky, it seems like the perfect time to go for a swim down at the rec center. Luckily for you, although the pool has been closed off the past two days, it seems as though this morning, someone has left the door unlocked ( Read more... )

[Kiritsugu doesn't come until word starts getting around. Whether it's still in the pool or removed, he won't physically interact with the body beyond observing and recognizing the uniform.]

[On any other day, he'd be taking action. Saving him is a tempting possibility, but one he can't bring himself to carry out right after having his real son droned by the town. His usual method of extracting information would only speed things up in a bad way, too.]

I don't suppose you're planning on being helpful.

[As he's face-down in the pool, there's no response.]

[He keeps standing nearby. He really, really doesn't want to do this. Not with what just happened. After all, helping someone in former collaboration with the town could very well result in danger to others, rather than saving people.]

[Still, if he is to see the real Shirou again, and if he wants Illya, as well as everyone else, to not be trapped here any longer... he doesn't have much of a choice, does he?]

[He approaches the body and turns it. A meaningless gesture in terms of saving someone, but even he's starting to understand that that's beyond his reach.]

[The body weakly splutters and coughs.]

[Having not quite the same personality from a few months ago, Kiritsugu gives him a few moments to recover.]

Officer. Could you tell me what happened here?

[He knows how useful this type of question has been. He's merely, if you'll forgive the pun, testing the waters. Gotta know what his attitude's like after being in this situation for a while.]

Wow, you know...this might just be crazy talk, but I think someone was shot!

[the sarcasm is heavy with this one]

[If Kiritsugu finds this frustrating (and he does), he doesn't show it. Still, this does tell him that extracting information through force would've been a bad idea. Kiritsugu's good, but he can't do much more than has already been done to Evan.]

If this is your idea of rebelling against Mayfield, then what do you have to gain from keeping information?

Oh, I don't know. The warm satisfaction of seeing you all suffer is good enough for me.

But that's not how you used to think. You gave up along the way.

[As always, Kiritsugu's tone remains as flat as ever, but speaking about that is concerning for him as well. He often gets close to crossing that line himself.]

[Then again, it could simply be the fact that he heard a man associated with Mayfield was once referred to as a 'hero'.]

You know nothing about me or what I did. So why don't you stop making stupid assumptions based off of a few pathetic scraps of information you managed to blunder into and fuck off?

[Well, that about tells him everything he needs to know. He's able to recognize that this is one of the few methods of gathering information at which he does not excel. However, if he attempts another one, he thinks he could very well kill Evan, and that wouldn't earn him any favors among the other residents, who are much more likely to get a meaningful conversation.]

I'll try to get you help, even if it won't do much good.

[Of course, the much scarier prospect is that he simply doesn't want to really try. He's been attempting to leave his old self behind, along with all of the killings. If he reverts right now, he'll be trading this life for an even unhappier one.]

[Without another word, Kiritsugu stands up and walks away.]
