[At 11:59 PM on Saturday, there's a loud whirring sound in the sky. One of the spaceships wobbles and then crashes dramatically to earth, landing just outside Mayfield near the entrance to the highway

[ Ilsa laughs, and then half-quotes, half-sings: ]

I'm just going to focus on making sure we're bouncing back instead of going numb.

[She smirks, amused by the singing, but there's something just a little jaded about her response.]

I think they have the same effect, so you shouldn't really be choosy about which one you get.

Ah, one means you're still ready to fight back, and the other might mean you don't care anymore.

[ Ilsa gives Mags a hug. ]

I'm still going to care a while longer, I hope.

[Canada won't move away after the hug, simply shifts enough to make it more like a cuddle, slouching to rest her chin on Ilsa's shoulder.]

No, I think sometimes you can be numb and still care about getting things done. Or maybe that's a different sort of numb. There are probably different ones, aren't there?

Huh. I've never thought about this before. Now it seems important. You know, like one of those important things that never mattered before but suddenly bam someone is treating you like you've grown up and you have to figure out how the world works.

[ Ilsa giggles, ] Sounds like a deep philosophical revelation you have in college, while drinking a lot.

I have some fabulous schools in my time, too, it's just kinda hard to justify sitting in on anything when I spend all my time figuring out how being a country works. And what if the teacher got the history wrong? It'd be just awful.

Tch. Political science, economics, sociology and biology aren't part of figuring out how to be a country?

[ Ilsa gives her a friendly nudge. ]

Besides, you're the type that would make the corrections to an instructor in private, the first time.

I suppose, but, gracious, don't talk to me about economics or I might cry. They're hard. [She makes a small whining noise and leans against Ilsa.]

But biology might be fun.

Nah, just get enough basic economic theory to stay out of trouble. [ Ilsa ruffles her hair. ] Take bio at the same time to balance out the sour with some sweet.

I've already been in and out of trouble half a dozen times now. [And that's just counting since confederation. Don't get her started on her colony days.] You may be on to something, though.
