Yeah, I'm trying to imagine my Uncle Harry's moonshine still being an artisian distillery. Just not working for me, as it was right beside the cow pasture...
There are actually micro-distilleries that are legal. Think Jack Daniels on a small scale. The story I heard on NPR indicated that the only technical difference between moonshine and bourbon/whisky is that the latter is aged in a wood barrel and the former is bottled straight from the still.
So I gather if your state will permit the license, you can legally make - AND SELL - moonshine. And from there we transition to "Artisan Distiller."
People wonder how writers get their ideas. Well, I had a character rolling around in my head (and I came up with HER from reading just the name "Ursula" in a book while taking a bath -- swear to God, read the name, and the character spooled right up and started talking to me). When I heard this story, I immediately knew what she did for a living.
Yeah. Now I have to go find some artisan distillers and do some research.
